Student-Athlete Profile: Matt Brown

Story by Millikin senior Alora Goodey

This week's featured Millikin athlete is sophomore football player Matt Brown of Champaign, Illinois.  Matt is in his second season as a starting linebacker for the Big Blue football team and is a Millikin Presidential Scholar.

What pre-game ritual or song do you listen to before a game?
I don't have any crazy pre-game rituals but I do have two things that are a must.
1. A workout with Jordan Williams.
2. A pregame chapel with my teammates. The songs for me usually consist of Contemporary Christian/worship, but I will dance to just about anything in the locker room.

What is your favorite athletic memory?
Currently, it would be my senior year of high school when the football team set the record for the most wins in a season in program history and our baseball senior class became the most winningest class in history. I have a feeling, however, that my favorite athletic memory is going to change in my next three years here at Millikin.

What is your major and career objective?
Business Management w/ a certificate in Not-for-Profit business. I hope to get involved in the Ministry after school but I have not determined in what capacity just yet.

Besides your sport, what do you love to do?
To me, a cup of hot coffee/tea, an early morning sunset, and a book is just as amazing as it sounds. I really love forming meaningful relationships with people from all walks of life. Further, I really strive to be cultured and knowledgeable. That starts with traveling, but it ventures over to visiting an arts fair, watching a play at a local theatre, and attending a yoga class with middle-aged women, for just a few examples. Whatever the opportunity that presents itself to me, I try to experience it.

If you could pick a superpower, what would it be? Why?
Super strength, endurance, agility, speed, reflexes, durability, healing, and intelligence. In other words, whatever Captain America has. Because he is great.

What is your favorite food or meal and why?
Anything homemade because you can taste the blood, sweat, and tears that went into making the food and the taste becomes all the better because of it.

What is your athletic background?
This is only my fifth year playing football; I started when I was a sophomore in high school.

Why the Big Blue?
Living 45 minutes away from Decatur my entire life, I always knew about the "Big Blue" university that laid at the center. However, I never thought that I would find myself going to school there. It wasn't until the recruiting process during my senior year of high school that my perspective completely shifted. My original stance against Millikin had become overmatched by the opportunity that the university was offering me. Millikin gave me the chance to be in a position of leadership academically, to compete and turn a program around athletically, and to be influential in the Millikin and Decatur community. Millikin recognized my achievements in the past, but they knew that I was capable of much more. By giving me the opportunity to be involved in so many different aspects of campus, I knew that I was going to be challenged more than ever before. That is why you go to college, and that is why I chose Millikin.

What is your favorite memory or moment here at Millikin University?
Being able to give a speech at Opening Convocation to the Millikin University Class of 2021 was a moment I will never forget.
