Big Blue Women Fall to #8 Washington University

          The Millikin University women's basketball team lost to #8 Washington University-St. Louis 58-43 at the Griswold Center in Decatur, Illinois on December 12.  The Bears are now 8-1 while Millikin goes to 4-4 on the season.
          The Bears jumped out to an early lead and had a 21-9 advantage at the end of the first quarter.  The Big Blue fought back in the second quarter out scoring Washington University 12-5 making it a 26-21 Bears advantage at halftime.
          Washington University then pulled away again in the third quarter putting up 10 more points than Millikin.  The fourth quarter was even with both teams putting up 14 points.
          The Bears shot 36 percent from the field while Millikin hit on 33 percent.  Millikin out rebounded Washington University 43-29.  Millikin was hurt by 27 turnovers compared to 13 for the Bears.
          Millikin's top scorer was Alyssa Saklak was 14 points and eight rebounds.  Alex Capeles added 10 points and six rebounds.  Emma Hoyer tied Saklak for the team high in rebounds with eight. 
          Millikin got two of its injured players back for the game.  Kelsey Going played 16 minutes in her first action of the season scoring five points and grabbing four rebounds.  Emily Schultz returned after missing four games to score seven points and grab four rebounds in 28 minutes of action.
          Washington University's top scorer was Lily Sarros with 12 points and five rebounds.  Amanda Martinez had 11 points and a team high seven rebounds.
           Millikin and Washington University-St. Louis welcomed athletes from Special Olympics of Illinois as part of Saturday's games.  The Special Olympians took part in a skills challange, five-on-five scrimmage and visiting with players from both teams.  Over 50 athletes from Special Olympics of Central Illinois were on hand.  Players from Millikin's volleyball and softball programs also took part in the event.   
           Millikin returns to action on December 19 traveling to St. Mary's College.
