Millikin Softball Sweeps to Keep Postseason Hopes Alive

The Millikin softball team swept a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) doubleheader at Carthage College on April 27 in Kenosha, Wisconsin.  The victories keep Millikin's hopes alive for fourth place in the conference and a spot in the CCIW Tournament.
Millikin won game one 5-2 and took the second game 4-2.
In game one, Millikin jumped out to an early lead in game one scoring three runs in the first inning.  After the first two Big Blue batters were retired, Alyssa Visvardis and Alyssa Voegele had back-to-back singles setting the stage for a three run homerun by freshman shortstop Alexis Dockins.
Millikin scored two more runs in the fifth inning again thanks to the long ball.  Visvardis singled and scored on Voegele's two run homerun to put Millikin up 5-1.
Visvardis and Voegele both went 3-4 in the game for Millikin.
Freshman Cathy Lebryk was the winning pitcher allowing seven hits and two earned runs over seven innings while striking out six.
Tiffani Palmatier led the Carthage offense going 2-3 with an RBI.
In game two, Millikin trailed 2-1 in the fifth inning, when the Big Blue scored three runs to take the lead.  Destiny Clemons had an RBI single to tie the game.
Brooke Heimerl's run scoring double and Visvardis' RBI single put Millikin up 4-2.  Heimerl was 3-3 in game two with two runs scored.
Lebryk was again the winning pitcher for Millikin throwing all seven innings and allowing eight hits and two earned runs.
Olivia Scott led Carthage going 2-4 with a triple and two runs scored.  Sam Phelps and Palmatier had the Lady Reds's RBIs.
Millikin finishes the regular season at 16-22 overall and 5-9 in conference play.  The Big Blue are in a three way battle with Elmhurst and Augustana for the final spot in this weekend's conference tournament.  Elmhurst stands at 4-8 in CCIW action and plays at Illinois Wesleyan tonight.  Augustana is 5-7 in conference games hosts North Park on Tuesday.

CCIW Race Update:
Elmhurst was swept by Illinois Wesleyan on Apri 27 eliminating the Bluejays from contention for fourth place in the conference regular season race and the final bertn in the CCIW Tournament.
With only Augustana and Millikin remaining in contention for the fourth place spot, the Vikings will earn the berth not matter the outcome of its games with North Park due to the edge in the tiebreaker.
