Game Recap: Football |

Big Blue Football Downed by Red Men

The Millikin football team lost to the Carthage College Red Men 50-28 on October 29 at Frank M. Lindsay Field in Decatur, Illinois. Millikin falls to 4-4, 3-3 on the season while Carthage improves to 6-2, 4-2.

The first two minutes of the game was all Carthage. The Red Men opened the scoring with 13:24 left in the first quarter on a 41 yard pass from Kyle Friberg to Jamahl Wright. A holding penalty on its first offensive play left the Big Blue with the ball inside its own 10 yard line. A Carthage sack put the ball at the one yard line. Carthage's Greg Money then tackled Kyle McMahon in the end zone for a safety to make it 9-0 Red Men.

After holding Carthage to a three and out on its next possession, the Millikin offense went to work. Millikin scored on a 19 yard pass from Nicco Stepina to Gerald Perry to make it 9-7.

Carthage extended its lead to 16-7 when Ethan Olles connected with Javier Rhoades on a 15 yard touchdown pass.

Millikin's Matt Brown intercepted a Olles pass and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown to make it 16-14 with 9:37 left in the first half.

Carthage's Gary Lafayette McGary then returned the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown to put Carthage up 23-14.

Millikin kept battling back and scored on McMahon five yard run to make it a 23-21 game with 5:46 left in the first half.

Carthage scored just before halftime on a two yard run by Nick Anzelmo to make it a 29-21 Red Men lead.

An unusual play on the first Millikin possession of the second half would prove costly for the Big Blue. After driving into Carthage's end of the field, Millikin's Stepina broke free on a 27 yard run heading toward the goal line. As Stepina reached the ball out to break the plane of the goal line the ball slipped out of his hand and went out of the back end of the end zone for a touchback.  Carthage then took advantage of the miscue and scored on its own weird fumble play. Anzelmo fumbled at the Millikin one yard line, but Carthage's Anthony Kundra fell on the loose ball in the end zone for a touchdown making it a 43-21 Carthage advantage.
Keegan Smith scored Millikin's final touchdown on a five yard run.

Stepina was 13-26-1 passing for 214 yards. He rushed for 63 yards on 14 carries. David Jackson had six catches for Millikin for 134 yards.

Friberg was 13-18 for Carthage for 179 yards and two touchdowns. James Cobbs III had five catches for 130 yards and one touchdown.

Brown led the Millikin defense with 10 tackles.

Millikin will travel to Elmhurst on Nov. 5.
