Millikin’s NCAA Run Ends with Loss to #2 Calvin

The Millikin University volleyball team's strong run in the 2016 NCAA Division III Volleyball Tournament came to and end with a 3-1 loss to second ranked Calvin College on the Knights home floor in Grand Rapids, Michigan on November 12.  The Big Blue's two NCAA wins gave Millikin its first ever trip to the NCAA Sweet 16 in volleyball.

Calvin won the first two sets.   In the first set, Calvin pulled out to a 21-14 lead midway through the set and went on to win 25-18.  Calvin used the same formula in the second set breaking open a tight match to build a 19-12 advantage and holding on to win 25-18.

The Big Blue stayed alive with a 25-22 win in the third set.  Erin Syversen had two straight kills to break a 21-21 tie to put the Big Blue up by two.  A Cassidy Kingery ace made it 24-21 and the match ended on a Calvin error.

Calvin lived up to its ranked as Division III second best team in the fourth set winning 25-14.

Syversen led Millikin with 20 kills and a .314 hitting percentage.  Syversen added seven digs.  Alora Goodey had eight kills and three blocks and Kelsey Talkington added seven kills with three blocks.  Emily Seegmiller had six kills.  Emily Mihalkanin had 41 set assists and four kills.  Cassidy Kingery had a team high 18 digs and Meredith Artime added 12 digs.

Calvin was lead by Laura Danoff with 16 kills followed by Anna Kamp with 15.

Millikin ends the season at 28-12.  Calvin improves to 30-1 and advances to the NCAA Elite Eight.
