Millikin Volleyball Goes 2-0 Saturday at Gargoyle Classic

Millikin University volleyball won two matches at the University of Chicago Gargoyle Classic in Chicago on September 3 defeating Rockford College and Dominican University.

The Big Blue were dominant in their match against Rockford winning 3-0, (25-13, 25-11, 25-12). Erin Syversen led the Big Blue with seven kills, Kelsey Talkington and Marissa McElroy each added five. Ally Isenhower had three aces while Alora Goodey and Rose Syversen had two each.

In the second match against Dominican University, Millikin came out on top once again winning 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-21). Syversen led the Big Blue in kills with 17 while Cortney Bohn had 16. Emily Mihalkanin added an ace and 24 set assists to help lead the team to the win.

Millikin Head Coach Debbie Kiick was very pleased with the opening weekend. After an epic match against number five Calvin, the Big Blue rebounded with three straight wins. In the final game of the tournament, the Big Blue avenged a loss to Domincan last year at the Griswold Center.
"They are talented, quick, big, and strong," said Kiick. "We swept them in three though, and it was a definite step forward in our program. We were able to control their powerful offense with our serving game, and spread our offense well to frustrate their defense. They are very strong blockers, But we were still able to terminate and put points on the board. Sweeping them was a very nice end to a weekend of great competition."

Syversen and Kingery were named to the Gargoyle Classic All-Tournament Team.

The Big Blue take the court again September 9 & 10 at the Wisconsin-Oshkosh Pizza Hut Classic in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
