Millikin Men’s Basketball Loses Heartbreaker in Overtime

          The Millikin men's basketball team lost in overtime 92-81 to Carthage College on January 20 in the Griswold Center in Decatur, Illinois.
          Carthage got a long buzzer beater from Brad Kruse to send the game into overtime.  Millikin's Elijah Henry made two free throws with 15 seconds left in regulation to give the Big Blue a 75-72 advantage.  Carthage's Steve Leazer missed a three-point attempt in the closing seconds, but Kruse chased the loose ball down along the baseline, spun and hit a long three-pointer from deep in the corner to tie the game.
          The overtime was all Carthage as they outscored Millikin 17-6. 
          The Big Blue played a strong first half and lead 42-23 at halftime.  Carthage began to whittle away at the Millikin lead, but the Big Blue were able to keep the Red Men from tying or leading in the second half until the buzzer beater.  Millikin lead 72-65 with 1:56 left in the game.  Back-to-back baskets by Kienan Baltimore including a three-point play cut the Millikin lead to 72-70 with 45 seconds left.  Millikin's Jordan Cunningham went one for one at the free throw line with 39 seconds remaining to make it a 73-70 game.  Kruse hit a layup with 16 seconds left to bring the Red Men to within one at 73-72 before Henry's free throws pushed it back to 75-72.
          Millikin shot 45 percent from the field.  The Big Blue hit on 47 percent in the first half and 58 percent in the second half.  Unfortunately, Millikin went ice cold in the overtime hitting only 2-11 (18 percent).  Carthage shot 49 percent from the field.  Millikin was 21-30 (70 percent) from the free throw line while the Red Men went 28-46 (61 percent).  Millikin won the rebounding battle 41-36.   
          Millikin had four players score in double figures lead by Elijah Henry with a double double with 21 points and 13 rebounds.  Zach Fisher had 20 points and Michael Beaty added 12.  DaVante Harrell had a double double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
          Carthage got 27 points from Kruse followed by Baltimore with 19 and Jordan Thomas with 18.
          Millikin falls to 8-9, 1-7 while Carthage improves to 10-7, 5-3.
          Millikin will travel to North Central on January 24 as its starts it second trip around the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.
