Millikin Baseball Rolls over Hendrix

          The Millikin baseball team continued its early season offensive display winning at Hendrix College 17-8 on Feb. 19 in Conway Arkansas.
          Millikin put up 17 runs on 22 hits and seven walks. During its four game trip to Arkansas, Millikin scored 51 runs with 67 hits and 24 walks.
Trailing 1-0, Millikin tied the game in the top of the second inning.  Jon Walters opened the inning with a single.  One out later, Walters went to third on a single from freshman first baseman Andrew Auton.  Senior Seth Coffey then scored Walters with a sacrifice bunt.
          In the third, Millikin again opened the inning with a base hit. Shortstop Anthony Bryan singled and scored on base hit from Julian Gutierrez.
          Millikin scored three runs in the fourth.  Devin Crews doubled home Hunter Wenstrom who had opened the inning with a single.  Crews then scored on a single from Bryan. Mason Bruce drove home the final run of the inning with a base hit.
          Hendrix opened the fourth with seven straight batters reaching base on six hits and a walk.  The Warriors scored six runs in the inning to take a 7-5 lead.
          Millikin wasted little time in responding.  Jake Drada walked to leadoff the fifth inning and Gutierrez tied the game with a two-run homerun. Walters then doubled and later scored on a double play groundout to put Millikin back in the lead 8-7.
          Millikin broke the game open with a nine run sixth inning.  The inning was highlighted by two run singles from Auton and Crews and a two run double from Bruce.
          Bruce led the Millikin offense going 4-6 with three RBI.  Crews was 3-5 with three RBI and three runs scored. Wenstrom had three hits on the day.  Bryan, Jake Drada, Gutierrez and Auton each had two hits with Gutierrez driving home three.
          Derek Kortemeier earned the victory in relief throwing three innings while allowing no runs on two hits and striking out three.  Kortemeier entered the game with the bases loaded and no out and pitched the Big Blue out of the fourth inning.  Brandon Viken and Anthony Rendina each pitched a perfect inning of relief.
          Millikin is 4-0 to open the season.  The Big Blue are scheduled to play two games at Fontbonne University in St. Louis on Saturday, February 27.  The Big Blue play the University of Chicago at 11 a.m. and Dominican at 2 p.m.
