Millikin Women’s Upset Bid Falls Short

         The Millikin women's basketball teams attempt to upset the #24 ranked and leader conference leader Wheaton College fell one point short as the Big Blue lost 76-75 on January 9 in Wheaton, Illinois.
         Millikin started out strong making 3-5 from three-point range in the first quarter to make it an 18-16 lead after one period. The Big Blue led 35-31 at halftime.
         Wheaton outscored Millikin by eight in the third quarter and led 52-48.  The Thunder led by as many as 10 before Millikin began to fight its way back. Freshman Aubrey Staton started the charge hitting a three to make it 68-61 with 3:48 remaining. Then Staton would bring Millikin to within 68-65 with 2:56 left to play. Hannah Williams then scored five straight for Wheaton to pull ahead 73-65.
         Staton answered with another three-pointer and it was 73-68 Wheaton with 35 second left on the clock. After a Wheaton free throw, a Staton layup made it 74-70 with 28 second left. The Big Blue's Jordan Hildebrand would make two free throws to bring Millikin to within two at 74-72 with 16 second remaining. Wheaton would use free throws to pull back ahead 76-72, but Millikin never quit and Yanni Saddler pulled Millikin to within one with a three-pointer with one second left in the game.
         Millikin shot 38 percent from the field and went 7-17 from three-point range. Wheaton hit 52 percent from the field and went 5-17 from three-point range. Millikin won the rebounding battle 38-34. Wheaton's shot blocking ability was a major factor with the Thunder recoding 12 blocked shot.
         Staton led Millikin with 25 points and six rebounds. Saddler had 15 points, five rebounds and six assists. Hildebrand had 11 points and 10 rebounds.
         Williams led Wheaton with 21 points.  Hannah Frazier had 15 points 10 rebounds and eight blocks.
         Wheaton improves to 12-3, 6-0 while Millikin goes to 5-10, 1-5.
         The Big Blue host #18 Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday at 2 p.m.
