Millikin Women’s Basketball Upsets #21 Wheaton

       The Millikin women's basketball team upset #21 Wheaton College 66-63 in overtime on December 7 at the Griswold Center in Decatur, Illinois.
       Millikin opened play in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) knocking off the defending champion Thunder. The Big Blue win broke a 14 game Wheaton winning streak over Millikin.
       Big Blue freshman Abby Ratsch scored the game winning basket and one free throw with two seconds remaining in the overtime period.
        Millikin trailed in the game 34-26 surviving a second quarter that saw the Big Blue go 2-15 from the field.  The Big Blue rallied in the third quarter and took the lead at 40-38 on a Jordan Hildebrand basket with 3:17 left in the third.  Millikin would lead 42-38 at the end of three quarters. 
        In the fourth quarter, Millikin would extend the lead to six points before Wheaton staged its own rally.  A three-pointer from Bonnie Zellar put the Thunder back on top 45-44 with just over four minutes left in regulation.  Wheaton lead 50-46 with 2:59 to go.  Aubrey Staton made it 52-51 Millikin with 29 seconds remaining.  Two Bailey Coffman free throws gave Millikin a 54-51 advantage. Wheaton would hit three free throws in the final seven seconds of regulation to tie the game at 54-54.
        A Staton three-pointer and a basket by Ratsch gave Millikin the first five points of the overtime period.  Hannah Frazier hit two straight baskets for Wheaton to pull within one.  Hannah Williams gave Wheaton a 60-59 advantage with a bucket with 1:52 left in the game.  Two free throws from Kelle Knopp and a basket from Briana Anthony gave Millikin a 63-60 lead with 37 second remaining.  Kristi Demski hit a three-pointer for Wheaton with 19 seconds left on the clock to tie the game at 63-63.
        Millikin shot 37 percent (24-65) from the field including going 4-6 from the field in the overtime period.  Wheaton was 20-62 (32 percent) from the field.  Millikin won the rebounding battle 50 to 40 holding Wheaton to 10 offensive rebounds and seven second change points.
        Hildebrand led Millikin with 18 points and 10 rebounds.  Ratsch had 11 points, 15 rebounds and three assists.  Coffman had 12 points and six rebounds.  Staton had 10 points and three assists.
        Williams led Wheaton with 17 points followed by Frazier with 13.
        Millikin is now 7-1, 1-0 while Wheaton goes to 7-3, 1-1.
        The Big Blue host Carroll University on Saturday, December 14 at 2 p.m.
