Baseball Falls in Extra Innings

The Big Blue baseball team fell on February 17 to Hendrix 5-4 in 10 innings in Conway, Arkansas. Millikin looked to bounce back in game three with junior Ben Williamson on the mound after dropping the first two of the series yesterday.

Millikin jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third. The rally began with a one out walk by Brent Beals. After Beals stole second, he was moved to third on a groundout to the first baseman by Anthony Bryan. Jon Walters followed by legging out an infield single, which scored Beals from third.
Hendrix responded in the bottom of the fourth inning with two runs that began with an infield single and was followed by a triple and a squeeze play. The game was a pitchers' duel until the top of the eighth inning, which began again with Beals. Beals singled but was forced out on the next play at second on a bunt attempt by Anthony Bryan. Bryan was safe at first and then advanced to second on a Mason Bruce single. Senior designated hitter Luke Azzarelli then came to the plate and hit a game tying double, scoring Bryan and advancing Bruce to third. After a pitching change, freshman Frank Bryan delivered a single to make the game 4-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth. Beals worked out of a jam in the bottom of the eighth by striking out Hendrix's Andrei Stoyanow on three pitches. Hendrix was able to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth. Millikin recorded the first two outs of the inning quickly, but Hendrix responded with a single, followed by an RBI double, which was followed by another RBI single.

In the top of the tenth inning, Jon Walters led off with a single but was ultimately stranded at second base. In the bottom of the tenth inning, Michael Stazscuk was able to get the leadoff hitter to flyout to right field, but a double by Hendrix's Ford Sherrington got the inning going for the Warriors. Millikin intentionally walked Stoyanow, and then Juan Pablo Leon worked a walk, as well. Rail Gilliam then stepped up and delivered the game-winning single for the Warriors.

The Big Blue are back in action again at Knox College on March 2 with a doubleheader that begins at 12p.m.
