Baseball Comeback Bid Falls Short Against #3 Trinity University

The Millikin Baseball team once again battled against a top-10 team in the country on March 12 but was unable to complete their comeback, falling 11-9 at #3 Trinity University.
The Big Blue traveled to San Antonio for the Tuesday afternoon game and jumped out early in the top of the first inning on two errors to begin the game. After leadoff hitter Anthony Bryan reached second on a ball to deep right center that popped out of the center fielder's glove, Luke Azzarelli's sacrifice bunt went back to the pitcher and was thrown down the line, scoring Bryan who had three runs scored for the Big Blue on the day.
After Trinity answered with two runs in the bottom of the second inning, Millikin regained the lead on a Azzarelli RBI single that scored Frank Bryan, and Brent Beals hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Jake Stanton. Stanton was 2-3 on the day for Millikin and scored three runs.
After falling behind 10-3 by the end of the third inning, Millikin scored one run in each of the next four innings and two runs in the top of the eighth inning to cut the Trinity lead to 10-9. During that stretch, Jon Walters had two RBI for the Big Blue during his 2-5 day. The Big Blue left 14 runners on base in the first eight innings before Trinity added an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning. Millikin stranded two more runners in the top of the ninth inning, as Trinity held off the final push of the Big Blue comeback.
Millikin will travel to Tyler, Texas on Wednesday for an exhibition game against the University of Texas-Tyler with a 6 p.m. first pitch. Follow @BigBlueBaseball on Twitter for updates on Millikin Baseball.
