Homeruns Push Millikin Past Illinois College

The Millikin Big Blue Baseball used three homeruns to defeat Illinois College 9-4 in Jacksonville, Illinois on March 20.

Millikin scored in every inning except for two against the Blueboys, who were the visitors on the scoreboard at their own home field, as the game was initially scheduled to be played in Decatur but was moved due to wet field conditions.

Millikin got on the board in the second inning after Mason Bruce was hit by a pitch, and Kyle Kane later brought him home with a two-run homerun to make the score 2-0. Kane scored again for the Big Blue in the fourth inning on a Jake Stanton homerun, a no-doubter that narrowly missed the windows of Illinois College's Bruner Center facility.

Illinois College tied the game in the top of the fifth inning, but Millikin dominated the rest of the way on the back of solid pitching by Connor Gross and Brent Beals, who struck out a combined five hitters in 4.1 innings of work. Millikin starting pitcher Evan Lawrence struck out five Blueboys of his own in his 4.2 innings.

Millikin regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning on a Beals single that advanced Anthony Bryan to third base. Savvy baserunning by Bryan allowed him to advance home on a misplay by the left fielder. Beals and Bryan were both 2-4 on the day, and they were joined by Kane and Stanton who also had multiple-hit days for the Big Blue. Stanton's second hit of the day came on another homerun to left field that scored Kane in the sixth inning.

Millikin scored again in both the seventh and eighth innings on RBI singles by Bruce and Bryan, respectfully.

Beals closed out the game for Millikin in the ninth inning on the mound.

Millikin is back in action at Knox College on Sunday, March 24 with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. Follow @BigBlueBaseball and @MUBigBlue on Twitter for updates and stories on Millikin Baseball and Millikin Athletics.
