Baseball Getting Hot Before Conference Opener

The Millikin Big Blue baseball team extended its winning streak to four games in a 12-2 victory over Wisconsin-Stout on March 25 in Decatur.

During the four game stretch, the Big Blue have outscored opponents 37-8 and have used balanced hitting and dominant pitching performances just before the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin season opener on March 27 at Augustana.

Wisconsin-Stout got on the board in the top of the first inning of the 2019 Big Blue home opener on an RBI double by Kasey Bass that just stayed in fair territory down the left field line. Starting pitcher Ben Williamson then stranded Bass and turned the game over to the Millikin offense, which has been hot over the past three games. That did not change today as the Big Blue racked up six runs in the bottom of the first on a two-RBI double by Jon Walters, a two-run homerun by Frank Bryan, an RBI single by Gabe Soria, and a wild pitch that scored Millikin first baseman Andrew Auton. The Big Blue batted around their order to gain the lead that they would not give up.

After a solo homerun by Jared Jarvensivu for Wisconsin-Stout made the game 6-2 in the top of the third inning, Williamson settled in for his final three innings, not giving up another run to the Blue Devils. Millikin put up four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on RBI hits by Luke Azzarelli and Brent Beals. Mason Bruce also provided a two-RBI double to make it 10-2 Big Blue and cap off the second big inning for Millikin on the day.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Big Blue added the two runs necessary to activate the 10 run mercy rule on a solo homerun by Bruce and an RBI single by Soria that scored Frank Bryan. Bruce was 2-4 on the day with three RBI, and Soria was 2-3 with two RBI.

The Big Blue look to stay hot against CCIW opponent Augustana on March 27, with the first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m. in Rock Island, Illinois. For updates on Millikin baseball and Millikin athletics, follow @BigBlueBaseball and @MUBigBlue on Twitter.
