Baseball Battles, Drops Series Opener to Carroll

The Millikin baseball team fell to Carroll University 1-0 on April 12 at Sunnyside Park in Decatur, Ill. It took a complete game shutout and several solid defensive plays for Carroll to win the opening game of the series.

Connor Gross for Millikin and Cameron Godinsky for Carroll engaged in a pitching duel, with a manufactured run by Carroll in the top of the third inning proving to be the difference. Both teams had five hits on the day, and both starting pitchers worked the entire game for their respective clubs.

In the top of the third inning, Carroll's second baseman Ethan Fleigle singled home T.J. Pfaffle for the game's only run after Pfaffle led off the inning with a single and was sacrifice bunted to second base. Millikin stranded just five runners on base compared to Carroll's seven, but Godinsky did find himself in a number of pressure situations, including in the bottom of the eighth inning with Luke Azzarelli at the plate and a runner on second. Azzarelli hit a very hard line drive that was caught at the shoelaces by Fleigle to end the inning. Gross worked out of several different jams, as well, on his way to striking out seven Pioneers hitters. Brent Beals led the Millikin attack, going 2-4 on the day.

Millikin looks to bounce back with a quick turnaround with first pitch of game two of the series scheduled for 12 p.m. April 13. With the loss, Millikin falls to 10-13 and 5-6 in CCIW play, while Carroll improves to 10-14 and 2-6 in conference play.
