Millikin Drops Doubleheader to Augustana

The Big blue baseball team lost both games of a doubleheader to College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin first-place team Augustana, 4-2 and 2-1 on April 16 in Decatur.

Millikin jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on an Andrew Auton single that scored Mason Bruce. Bruce was 2-3 in game one and was the only Big Blue hitter with multiple hits. Augustana produced a run in the top of the third inning after a nice at-bat by Ryan Kairis ended in a groundball to second and scored Sam Beyer from third. Millikin took the lead again in the fourth inning on a Luke Azzarelli RBI singlebut Augustana again answered in the next half inning with two more of their own on a Tyler Nunez two RBI single. Augustana added an insurance run in the eighth inning, and Millikin wasn't able to respond for the rest of the game. Chris Refka went the distance for the Vikings, allowing just five hits and giving up the two Big Blue runs. Millikin starter Derek Kortemeier was excellent on the mound, as well going 5.2 innings and giving up three runs.

Game two offered another pitchers' duel, with Millikin's Brent Beals and Augustana's Connor Berek both going seven innings. Beals struck out eight and walked just one, while Berek struck out seven and walked four. Both pitchers worked out of jams consistently when they came, but Augustana was able to break through in the top of the eighth inning on back to back homeruns by Kairis and Nunez. Millikin responded in the bottom of the eighth on a play in which Anthony Bryan scored from second base on a fielder's choice double play attempt that forced the Augustana first baseman Gunnar Haskins to the ground on the back end. Bryan attentively took home on the play as Haskins was unable to collect himself in time to make the throw home.

Millikin threatened again in the bottom of the ninth inning with Bruce sending a ball to deep right center field that was caught at the warning track, just shy of the fence. Frank Bryan then singled to right field as a part of his 2-4 day, but Augustana pitcher John Hayes was able to get the next two Big Blue hitters to earn the save.

Millikin drops to 12-15 on the year and 7-8 in CCIW play, while Augustana improves to 22-5-1 and 11-1 in conference play. Millikin will look to bounce back on the road against Illinois Wesleyan on Friday April 19th in a double header that starts at 3 p.m.
