Millikin Baseball Splits Doubleheader against Green Knights

The Millikin baseball team split its doubleheader on May 4 against St. Norbert College, 6-1 and 3-4 in the last games scheduled for Millikin at Decatur's Sunnyside Park.

The Big Blue earned win number 20 in game one on the back of a nice pitching performance by senior Adam Zuk. Zuk earned the win on the mound going five innings and striking out six Green Knights hitters. The Big Blue had two hit days by Mason Bruce (2-3) and Kyle Kane (2-4), and Jon Walters started the scoring in the bottom of the second inning with a homerun to the deepest part of the field in left center. Millikin was then led by a balanced attack for the rest of the game, with six of the nine starters earning RBI's for the Big Blue.

St. Norbert used solid defensive play in game two to hold Millikin to just the three runs, and early scoring for the Green Knights was all that was needed to secure the victory. Homeruns by Keagan McCarthy and Lucas Reynolds were enough for St. Norbert to earn the victory, holding off a late game comeback bid by the Big Blue. Millikin starting pitcher Connor Gross worked out of a jam nicely in the top of the fifth inning to keep the Green Knights with a four-run lead, but Millikin was not quite able to overcome the deficit. Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the eighth, Millikin scratched across three runs on four hits, including RBI singles by sophomores Andrew Auton and Brent Beals but were not able to push across another in the ninth.

The Big Blue honored twelve seniors before the start of the first game for their contributions to the Millikin baseball program. With the game one victory, the senior class of Mason Bruce, Adam Peters, Luke Azzarelli, Jake Stanton, Ryan Dobey, Jon Walters, Derek Kortemeier, Nick Followell, Brandon Viken, Anthony Bryan, Connor Gross, and Logan Talkington have played on two of the eight teams in Millikin baseball history to have won over 20 games in a single season and will be the first team since 1990 to compete in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin tournament that begins next week. Millikin will complete CCIW regular season play tomorrow, May 5 in North Central in a doubleheader that begins at 12 p.m. For updates on Millikin baseball, follow @BigBlueBaseball on Twitter.
