JACKSON, Miss. - Millikin Baseball started their weekend at Millsaps University in Jackson, Mississippi taking on Southwestern University. The Big Blue would fall 4-1 to bring their record to 1-3 on the season.
Senior
Adam Zuk would get the start on the mound for Millikin, throwing 6.0 innings, allowing four runs on three hits. Zuk would record seven strike outs and three walks on the day.
The Big Blue would get on the board early in the top of the first inning, with
Frank Bryan picking up a walk that would see
Brent Beals score from third on a failed pick off by Southwestern first baseman Preston Witt. Beals would score Millikin's lone run in the game, giving the Big Blue an early 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the first.
Southwestern would quickly respond in the bottom half of the first inning, tying the game at 1-1 on a Lance Kruse single to left field that would see Daniel Montgomery Jr. score from third. A batter later, Seth Sparks would drive in Byron Dowdel from second to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead after one inning.
The game would remain 2-1 for the next four innings until Southwestern would tack two more runs onto their lead in the bottom of the sixth. The first run would be scored on a balk to bring Daniel Montgomery Jr. across the plate. Seth Sparks would score another run for the Pirates on a sacrifice fly to center field that would score Preston Witt to bring the score to the final score of 4-1.
The Big Blue would post six hits in the game, with
Gabe Soria and
Andrew Auton hitting two doubles for the Big Blue. Soria and Auton would record the game's only extra-base hits.
Southwestern's Travis Harvey would pitch a complete game, allowing one run on six hits, striking out 12.
Millikin will continue their weekend in Mississippi on Saturday, February 29 as they face Millsaps College at 4:00 PM.
