Men's Volleyball Sweeps Season Series Against Rockford

ROCKFORD, Ill. - Millikin Men's Volleyball was on the road in Rockford, Illinois as they took on the Rockford University Regents on February 28. The Big Blue would win in straight sets, sweeping the season series against Rockford after defeating them in the first ever home Men's Volleyball match in Millikin University history on February 4. 

The Big Blue would start the first set recording the first point of the match on an ace served up by freshman setter Robbie Maida. The score would tie ten times before Millikin pulled away late in the set, going on four multi-point scoring runs, including back to back aces by Shayden Attao to put the Big Blue up by six to win the set 25-19. 

In the second set, it would again be Robbie Maida who put Millikin on the board first with a kill assisted by North Chicago, Illinois native Jose Gallardo. Millikin would hold the lead for the entirety of the set, going on six multi-point scoring runs, including two runs scoring four straight points. The Big Blue would win the second set 25-16, the largest score differential of the night. 

The third set saw Millikin gain an early 4-0 edge on the Regents before Rockford would call a timeout. The Big Blue would come out of that timeout to score three more to go up 7-0 before a kill by Matthew Seger would end the streak. In the middle of the set, Arturo Sanchez would add an ace to his stats to put Millikin up by 11. The Big BLue carried the momentum throughout the rest of the set, at one point taking a 23-9 lead on Rockford. The Regents would make a slight comeback later in the third set to bring the score to 25-18 in favor of Millikin. 

Millkin would record an impressive 11 aces on the night, six of them coming from Jose Gallardo. Gallardo's six aces are a season high for the freshman outside hitter. Adding to Gallardo's six were Shayden Attao who had two aces, while Robbie Maida, Arturo Sanchez and Colby Campbell each had one. 

Kyle Clendenen led the Big Blue with seven kills on the night, while Colby Campbell recorded six of his own and Shayden Attao had five. 

On defense, Peter Sailsman led the charge at the net with five blocks and Kyle Clendenen put up two on the night. Willie Valentine led the match putting up ten digs with Robbie Maida close behind with nine. 

The Big Blue are back in action on Tuesday, March 3 as they take on Greenville University on the road in Greenville, Illinois at 7:00 PM.
