Men's Volleyball Shuts Out Rockford, Records First Win of Season

DECATUR, Ill. - Millikin Men's Volleyball hosted the Rockford University Regents at the Griswold Center on Tuesday night, marking the first Men's Volleyball game at home in school history. The Big Blue would shut out Rockford in three sets, holding the Regents to scores in the teens in all three sets.

The first set saw Millikin and Rockford score back and forth until a four point scoring run by the Big Blue would put Millikin up 11-7. Rockford would get one point back, but that would spark another multi-point scoring run for Millikin, this time scoring six with freshman Jose Gallardo posting two aces in the run. Millikin would continue to own the set, ending the first on a service ace by Guam native Shayden Attao to win 25-12.

In the second set of the match, the Big Blue would get on the board first on a service error committed by Jorge Pando. Millikin would hold the lead for the remainder of the set, going on six runs scoring two or more points. The Big Blue would have an eight point lead four times in the set and would win by nine with a 25-16 final set score.

Millikin would keep the momentum rolling in the third set with the game only tying once at 1-1 at the beginning of the set. The Big Blue would go on a four point run to create a gap early, but Rockford slowly chipped away coming back to be down by only two points in the middle of the set at 12-10. Millikin would continue the charge in the set, slowly pulling away from the Regents and winning by a final score of 25-18, the smallest point differential of the night, ending the match with a 3-0 Millikin victory.

Colby Campbell and Kyle Clendenen tied for a match-high eight kills on the night with Peter Sailsman following close behind posting seven kills of his own. Aiding on offense was freshman setter Robbie Maida who led the match with 31 assists. North Chicago, Illinois native Jose Gallardo led Millikin from the serve line with four aces in the match while Shayden Attao had two.

Kyle Clendenen not only shined offensively, but held down the defense at the net, as well, recording a match-leading four blocks. Peter Sailsman and Colby Campbell were also key players on defense tonight with Sailsman posting three blocks and Campbell with two blocks. There was a three-way tie in the match for most digs with Willie Valentine, Robbie Maida and Shayden Attao all recording seven digs in the match.

Millikin recorded 37 kills on the night, only committing eight errors on 68 total attempts to hit a solid .468%. The Big Blue held Rockford to a mere .095%; the Regents would commit 17 errors on 74 total attempts, recording only 24 kills.
