HILTON HEAD, S.C. - Millikin Tennis took on Ohio Wesleyan University in the third day of the Spring Tennis Fest in Hilton Head, South Carolina on Wednesday, March 11. Men's Tennis would defeat the Battling Bishops 6-3 but the women would be unable to pull off the win, falling 6-3. With the win, men's tennis improves to 3-7 on the season while the women see their record at 5-11.
Men's Tennis would sweep the doubles matches with Jacob Palley and Logan Bennett defeating Ben Stein and Omar Santiagonunez 8-7, needing a tiebreaker to decide the winner. Palley and Bennett would win the tiebreaker 7-2 to secure the win. In #2 doubles, Clayton Maack and Nick Laramee would defeat Billy Lewis and Ryan Simon 8-4 and Cory Erickson and James Broach would top Alex Riess and Miller Buckholz 8-6 to go into singles with a 3-0 lead.
The Big Blue would split singles matches with OWU to win the match 6-3. Jacob Palley saw himself in the #1 singles spot facing Ben Stein and would win in three sets 5-7, 6-2, 10-7. Clayton Maack would also record a win in singles after taking down Ryan Simon 6-3 in the first set and 7-6 in the second after winning the tiebreaker 7-4. Logan Bennett would defeat Miller Buckholz in the #3 singles match 6-3, 6-2. Nick Laramee would record a loss on the day in singles against Alex Riess, losing 6-4, 6-1. Adrian Sanchez-Rodriguez would square off against Omar Santiagonunez in the #5 singles match and would lose the first set 6-1 before ending the match in the second set due to injury. At #6 singles was Cory Erickson who took on Billy Lewis and would fall 6-4, 6-3.
In the women's match,
Alena Hinch and
Amber Rezinas would claim the only doubles victory for the Big Blue, beating Olivia Guenzel and Erin McPherson 8-7 after winning the tiebreaker 8-3.
Brianna Barconi and
Shelby Jones would be taken down by Ale Coronel-Zegarra and Ruthie Silberman 8-3 while
Danielle Beard and
Katie Cooper would lose to Katie Lee and Emma Zajac 8-6.
In singles play, it would again be Hinch and Rezinas that would pull out the only wins with Hinch topping Olivia Guenzel 6-2, 6-1 and Rezinas recording a clean sweep against Erin McPherson winning both sets 6-0, 6-0.
Shelby Jones would lose to Ale Coronel-Zegarra 6-0, 6-0 in the #1 singles match. At the #2 spot
Brianna Barconi would go three sets with Ruthie Silberman but would fall 4-6, 6-4, 2-10.
Danielle Beard and Katie Lee faced off in the #3 singles matchup where Lee would defeat Beard 6-1, 6-2. The #4 singles match saw
Katie Cooper take on Emma Zajac; Cooper would fall in three sets 6-2, 5-7, 6-10.
Millikin Tennis will wrap up their trip to Hilton Head on Friday, March 13 as they face Gordon College for their final match at the Spring Tennis Fest. The match is slated to set at 8:30 AM ET.
