Women's Volleyball Finishes 3-0 at Five State Classic with Pair of Wins on Senior Day

The Big Blue women's volleyball took to their home court in the Griswold Center for two Senior Day matches on Saturday, October 16. Millikin matched up against Trine University in a morning matchup before taking on Westminster College in the afternoon. The Big Blue finished the day with a 2-0 record to complete an undefeated weekend as the hosts of the Millikin Five State Classic.

Before their second match of the day, the Big Blue took time to celebrate their five seniors: Lauren Brummel, Kamryn Flesner, Leah Fowler, Grace Knowski, and Jenna Thelen.

In the first matchup of the day, Millikin took the first two sets against the Trine Thunder, dropped the third, then rebounded to secure a 3-1 victory. Tori Stuart continued her offensive prowess as the kills leader with 20, along with two service aces and 10 digs. Kamryn Flesner added 13 kills, and Jessi Kreder added 10. Kailee Itzenhuiser and Anna Deutschmann each tallied two service aces for the Big Blue in the matchup. Lauren Brummel and Kreder tied for the top number of total blocks with five, and Reece Brown added 48 assists to her season totals. Julianna Vassallo led the squad in digs. Millikin outkilled Trine 57-43 in the four sets.

For the Thunder, Jocelynn Nicholls was their top kills-getter with 12, and Olivia Jolliffe tallied 10. Trine's Kacie VanKalker topped the digs column for the Thunder with 14.

In the first set, back-to-back service aces off the hand of Stuart helped Millikin to a 3-1 lead. Trine rallied back with a run of their own, including a VanKalker service ace that gave the Thunder a 5-3 advantage. The set remained tightly contested throughout, and Trine pulled ahead 20-17 late in the set on a Millikin service error. Millikin rallied back with a 4-0 run to knot the score at 23, highlighted by a Deutschmann service ace. It took 28 points to put away the Thunder and ended with a kill from Stuart and a service ace from Brown.

Millikin used their momentum from the first set to take a 5-2 lead early on a service ace by Vassallo. They stretched their lead to five with a block by Sophia Gibbs and Brummel at 10-5. A 4-0 run that ended in four straight kills from the Big Blue pushed the lead to seven, then 10 on another 4-0 run ending in yet another block by Gibbs and Brummel. Trine used a kill from Nicholls to stop the Big Blue run, but Millikin used kills from Stuart and Flesner, then a block by Brummel to take the 25-13 set victory and pull ahead 2-0 in the match.

As was the case in the first two sets of the morning, Millikin pulled ahead early 6-2 with Vassallo behind the service line. Trine used a 5-0 run to take a 12-8 lead over the Big Blue, including two service aces by the Thunder's Rachel Campbell. Millikin used a short run of their own to pull within one, including back-to-back service aces by Itzenhuiser. Trine closed out the set and their 25-19 set victory on a 4-0 run.

In the fourth set, Millikin once again pulled ahead early. A 7-0 run with Sophie Howell behind the service line helped the Big Blue to build an early 10-2 lead. Trine rallied with a few points of their own, but another 7-0 run with Brown serving gave MU a 20-6 advantage. Trine used a late game rally to pull within nine, but Millikin secured a 25-15 fourth set win on a Thunder attacking error.

After the senior day festivities, Millikin sought to complete a perfect 3-0 weekend against Westminster College. Millikin's Flesner tallied 10 kills, with Brummel and Kreder each chipping in seven. Brown led the team in two categories with five aces and 29 set assists. Deutschmann tallied the top number of digs with seven, and Kreder notched five total blocks. Millikin tallied 13 aces in the matchup, and outkilled the Blue Jays 36-13.

The first set saw contributions from all five seniors, including a service ace by Knowski that helped the Big Blue to a 10-4 advantage during a 4-0 run. A kill from Fowler highlighted a 5-0 run that saw the Big Blue pull ahead 15-5. Millikin's Deutschmann served up five straight, and back-to-back kills by Kreder pushed the Big Blue up 23-10, then closed out a 25-13 win on a Kreder kill.

MU started off strong once again, taking an early 6-1 lead with a block by Kreder and Brummel. A run with Brown serving gave Millikin a 15-6 second set lead. Six more Millikin points with Knowski serving gave Millikin a 21-7 lead. Fowler served up an ace to bring the set to game point. Two straight points from the Blue Jays extended the set, but a Westminster error gave Millikin a 25-14 set win.

The final set of the tournament for the Big Blue began once again with the Big Blue off to a hot start. A block by Kreder and Brummel stopped a Westminster run and kept Millikin in the lead at 7-4. Kills by Brown and Flesner, along with a service ace from Deutschmann pushed the Big Blue ahead by a 12-4 margin. An 8-0 run with Itzenhuiser serving gave MU a 20-5 lead. Millikin closed out the 25-8 set win on kills by Thelen and Brummel.

With the pair of wins, Millikin women's volleyball improved to 16-7 overall. They will match up against a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin in their final home matchup of the regular season on Wednesday, October 20 at the Griswold Center at 7:00 PM.
