Women's Tennis Falls to Wheaton in CCIW Tournament Semifinal Match

The second-seeded Millikin women's tennis matched up with #3 Wheaton College on Friday, October 22 in the semifinal round of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Fall Championships. When the two teams met in the regular season, the Big Blue defeated the Thunder 5-4. On day two of the CCIW Tournament hosted by Elmhurst University at Centre Court in Hanover Park, Ill., it was the Thunder who bested MU by a score of 5-1.

Wheaton found themselves in the win column first, with their No. 2 doubles squad of Hoogerheide and Adams defeating Millikin's Nikol Obradovic and Chloe Sabin by an 8-5 margin. The Thunder pulled ahead 2-0 with the second match to finish with the No. 3 team of Destiny Galvan and Shelby Jones falling to Backer and Van Ye 8-3. Tallying a win for Millikin was the team of Emily Markus and Paige Willer with a comeback victory at No. 1 doubles, taking down Ahn and Vick 8-6. 

On the singles side, Wachs picked up another win for the Thunder at No. 5, defeating Sabin in a win by retirement after Sabin fell 6-4 in the first set. Hoogerheide followed suit, defeating Brianna Barconi 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3. The final match to finish was at No. 6 with Adams defeating Cristina Borunda. Borunda took the first set 6-1 before falling 6-0, 6-1 in the final two sets. 

At the time of the fifth set win for Wheaton, Obradovic was up at No. 1 after winning the first set 7-5, with the second set tied at 1-1. Markus had fallen in the first set 6-3 and was down 6-5 in the second set at No. 2. Willer fell in the first set to Backer at No. 4 by a 7-5 score, but she led 3-1 in set two at the time of finish. 

Millikin will play in the third place match at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 23 against the #5 Augustana Vikings, who were defeated by top-seeded North Central 5-0 in Friday's matchup.
