Women's Volleyball Closes out CCIW Play with Win at Carroll

The Big Blue women's volleyball team closed out their 2021 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin regular season at Carroll University in Waukesha, Wis. on Wednesday, October 27. Millikin swept the Pioneers to improve to 5-3 in the conference standings. 

Tori Stuart led Millikin in kills with 14. Lauren Brummel added eight while leading the Big Blue in blocks along with Jessi Kreder, tallying four apiece. Kamryn Flesner chipped in seven kills. Reece Brown was credited with 34 assists in teh win, and Julianna Vassallo was the digs leader for MU with 12. Kailee Itzenhuiser tallied 11 digs. 

The Big Blue started off hot in set one. A 5-0 run with Brown behind the service line gave MU an early advantage, but Carroll produced a 5-0 run of their own to even the score. The game remained tightly knotted until two kills by Anna Deutschmann and a kill off the hand of Stuart highlighted a 4-0 Big Blue run and put MU up by a 14-9 margin. A block by Flesner and Kreder pushed the MU lead to seven at 21-14, and the Big Blue capped off the 25-16 set victory with kills by Stuart and Brown. 

The second set was tightly contested to start with six tie scores before MU went on a 5-0 run with Sophie Howell behind the service line to give MU a 16-13 advantage. Carroll rebounded and tied the score at 19 apiece on a kill by Peyton Frost, but Millikin closed out the set on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a block by Sophia Gibbs and Brummel to take set two 25-20.

In the third set, it was the Pioneers who pulled out to an early lead. a block by Rebekah Andreae, followed by a kill by Andreae gave the Pioneers a 7-3 lead over the Big Blue. A kill by Flesner and two Carroll mistakes helped Millikin to tighten the gap and pull within one. Then, a 3-0 run with Itzenhuiser serving gave MU a 9-8 lead. Another short run by the Big Blue lengthened the lead to three. Carroll once again tied things up with a 4-0 run and knotted the set at 15. Back-to-back kills by Flesner and Kreder broke the tie and put MU up by two. Millikin took a 24-21 advantage on a kill by Flesner, but Carroll extended the game by putting up two more points. Gibbs closed out the match with a kill in the 25-23 set victory for a Big Blue sweep. 

With the win, Millikin improved to 18-10 overall on the season, 5-3 in CCIW play. The Big Blue will match up against two more non-conference opponents on Saturday, October 30 at the Baden Invite hosted by Washington University in St. Louis. MU will take on the host Bears of WashU, and the Tigers of DePauw University with their first match beginning at 10:30 A.M.
