Big Blue Softball Drops Doubleheader to #7 DePauw

The Big Blue softball team matched up against the seventh ranked DePauw Tigers on Tuesday, March 16 at the Workman Family Softball Field.

In game one, DePauw struck first in the top of the first scoring two runs after Lily Jennings walked and Becca St. Germain doubled to right center. St. Germain scored after a single by Kelsey Bernhard advanced her to third and Paige Price walked with the bases loaded.

The Big Blue chipped away at the 0-2 lead DePauw built in the bottom of the third inning on two hits. A double to right field off the bat of Aubrey Hunt scored Kaylee Goluch who had singled up the middle. Millikin tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when Maddie Holland scored on another single by Goluch.

Millikin went on to take their first lead of the afternoon in the bottom of the sixth when Holland doubled to right center, and a double down the left field line from the bat of Kailey Pulec scored Holland.

The Tigers tied the game in the top of the seventh after Kaylyn Linder reached on an error, Abby Pyburn laid down a sacrifice bunt, and pinch hitter Drew Bratcher singled to right field.

In extra innings, both teams were held scoreless until the tenth when the international tiebreaker was implemented, and the Tigers scored two runs with three hits in a row. Goose Moore started on second base for the Tigers, scoring the first run on a double by St. Germain. St. Germain scored the second after back to back hits by Emily Timberman and Kelsey Bernhard, bringing the Tiger lead to 3-5.

The Big Blue rallied back in the bottom of the tenth with Leah Foreman starting on second base. She advanced to third on a wild pitch and was brought home on a double by Hunt to right field. Their rally fell short, and they fell to the seventh ranked Tigers 4-5 in game one.

Aly Armstrong pitched all 10 innings for Millikin, tallying six strikeouts but taking her first loss of the season to fall to 2-1. Cami Henry earned the win for the Tigers, striking out 13 Big Blue batters in her 10 innings of work.

In game two, the Tigers put up eight runs in the top of the first inning, facing three different pitchers from the Big Blue. Millikin found their way into the scoring column in the bottom of the first starting with a single up the middle by Goluch. Foreman brought her in on a double to left field, and she later scored on a wild pitch.

DePauw racked up three more runs in the top of the second, rounding out the scoring for the game. The Big Blue dropped game two in five innings, 2-11.

Addison Sargent took the loss in game two, falling to 1-1 on the season. Freshman Audrey Eades pitched 3.2 innings, holding the Tigers to one hit and striking out three in 12 batters faced.

Goluch led the Big Blue at the plate, going 4-for-8 with a double. Foreman was 2-for-5 with a double.

Millikin softball will jump back into conference play at home on Saturday, March 20 when they face North Central College in a doubleheader.
