Millikin Softball Splits Doubleheader with Visiting Warhawks

Millikin softball faced a non-conference opponent in the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Sunday, March 21. The Big Blue split with the Warhawks, each taking one game of the doubleheader. In game one, Millikin took the win with a 5-1 victory, and they were defeated by the Warhawks in game two 1-5.

Aly Armstrong picked up her fourth win of the season in the circle during game one, striking out eight and only allowing four hits. Four different pitchers appeared for the Warhawks with Kate Cleveland taking the loss.

Millikin's offense struck early with two outs in the first inning. Leah Foreman started things off with a double to right field. After back to back walks by Aubrey Hunt and Gretchen Gould, the Big Blue had the bases loaded for Lexus Tennison. A single to center off the bat of Tennison scored Foreman, followed by a single from Maddie Holland that scored Hunt to give MU a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, Millikin saw back to back singles from Skielyr Trenkle and Rylee Blake. A sacrifice bunt from Kaylee Goluch put two runners in scoring position, and a Foreman single to right center scored both Trenkle and Blake. The Big Blue scored their final run on a sacrifice fly by Tennison when Foreman crossed the plate.

The Warhawks scored their only run of game one in the top of the fifth inning after Meghan Dunning was issued a walk, and a double from Vera Pflugradt scored Dunning.

The Big Blue tallied 12 hits in game one, with Foreman going 4-for-4. Tennison went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Gould was 2-for-2 at the plate in game one.

Game two saw two different pitchers for MU with Addison Sargent credited with the loss. Freshman Audrey Eades saw some late game innings for the Big Blue.

The Warhawks found themselves in the scoring column first, picking up a run in the top of the third inning. Sydney Anderson reached on a fielder's choice, with Kaleigh O'Brien out on the play after a leadoff single. The Big Blue picked up their second out of the inning with a strikeout, but Pflugradt reached on an error and Anderson crossed the plate for the first run of the game.

After holding Millikin scoreless in the bottom of the third, the Warhawks offense struck again in the top of the fourth. Delaney Beck reached on an error for Whitewater and scored after back to back singles advanced her around the bases. The Big Blue prevented Whitewater from scoring a third run when Camryn Skundberg threw out Meg Cohrs at home when she tried to advance on a fielder's choice from O'Brien.

MU rallied back in the bottom of the fourth. After picking up two quick outs, a double to right center by Skundberg followed by a Tennison double to left field put the Big Blue in the scoring column.

Whitewater struck again in the top of the fifth. A leadoff walk by Pflugradt and a single by Sophia Kinjerski, followed by another walk issued to Nikki Mikosz loaded the bases for the Warhawks. The third walk of the inning, this time by Cohrs, gave Whitewater their third run.

The Big Blue threatened to score in the fifth starting with a pinch hit leadoff single from Grace Biondo. After Trenkle reached on an error, Biondo was thrown out at third after a fielder's choice. First baseman O'Brien robbed Goluch of a base hit down the line and stifled the Millikin rally.

Whitewater scored their final two runs of game two in the sixth after O'Brien started the inning with a leadoff double to center. A double from Anderson put another run on the board for Whitewater, and the third double of the inning, this time off the bat of Kennedy Cox, scored the fifth run.

Millikin softball will jump back into conference play on Saturday, March 27 at the Workman Family Softball Field against Carroll University.
