Men's Volleyball Drops Straight Sets to Second Ranked Carthage

The Millikin men's volleyball team matched up against the undefeated, second ranked Carthage Firebirds on Thursday, April 1 at the Griswold Center. The Big Blue were defeated in straight sets.

As the final home game of the 2021 season, the men's volleyball team celebrated their lone senior, graduate student Erik Sanchez.

Colby Campbell led the Millikin attack with eight kills. Jose Gallardo added six, and Jakob Henderson tallied five kills. Robbie Maida added 20 assists, and Fred Halper notched 17 digs.

Carthage jumped out to a 10-3 lead over the Big Blue in the first set with a service ace by Carter Schmidt. A kill by Henderson extended the first set at 14-23, but Carthage ran off the final two points to take a 15-25 victory.

In the second set, Millikin took a 4-1 lead with Gallardo behind the service line. The Firebirds quickly rallied back to bring the score to 5-4. Carthage pulled ahead by a 7-8 margin for their first lead of the set on a block by Keegan Brumitt. The Big Blue regained the lead on a kill by Gallardo. The MU lead stretched to 15-14 before Carthage took over. A block by Parker Connolly put the Firebirds up five. Back to back blocks on attacks by Peyton Wieter from Michael Anderson and Chelan Beavers extended the game and put the Big Blue within four, but a block by Andrew Otto and Nick Cookingham sealed the 20-25 victory for Carthage.

In the third set, a 6-1 run by Carthage set the tone. Millikin rallied back, aided by back to back kills from Campbell and Henderson to pull within six at 13-19. The Firebirds came away with the 15-25 victory to complete the straight sets sweep of the Big Blue.

Millikin men's volleyball will face their final opponent of the spring season on Saturday, April 3 in Illinois Wesleyan at the Shirk Center in Bloomington, Ill.
