Sixth Ranked Women's Volleyball Defeats Illinois Wesleyan, Loses to #3 Carthage

The Millikin Women's Volleyball team participated in their final games of the season in Bloomington, Ill. at Illinois Wesleyan University on Wednesday, April 14. The Big Blue defeated Illinois Wesleyan in four sets, but were defeated by Carthage College for the third time this season. 

In their first matchup of the night, the Big Blue took two sets from Carthage before dropping three straight. Kamryn Flesner led the way for Millikin with 19 kills, and Tori Stuart tallied 15 kills and 20 digs. Madison Clarida chipped in 10 kills along with two service aces and three blocks. Alyssa Vignos racked up 20 more digs alongside four service aces. Sarah Bingenheimer led the Big Blue in the assists column with 56. Jessi Kreder added five blocks, and Lauren Brummel added three blocks. 

In the first set, Madison Clarida tallied two service aces in a run that put the Big Blue up 4-1. After Carthage rallied back to close the gap, Millikin closed out the game on a kill from Stuart for a 25-22 victory. 

The second set saw Millikin take a 2-0 lead, riding a 5-0 run with Vignos behind the service line, complete with two service aces, to take a 22-12 lead. They closed out a 25-13 second set victory with a kill by Madison Clarida

In set three, Carthage jumped out to a 1-6 lead over the Big Blue. The Firebirds held the lead for the entire set and defeated Millikin 19-25. The fourth set was tightly contested, with both teams knotted at the same score on 15 different occasions. After falling behind 1-5, MU crawled their way back into the game, tying things up at seven apiece. Carthage pulled out the 24-26 win to force a fifth set. 

To begin the fifth set, Millikin pulled ahead 3-2 on a block by Stuart and Kreder. In the set to 15, the score was tied 10 different times. Carthage pulled ahead 11-14, and the Big Blue tallied two straight points with a kill from Flesner and a block by Clarida and Bingenheimer. A kill from Molly Skoda closed things out for the Firebirds and secured the 13-15 set victory, as well as the match victory. 

Haley Horner led the Firebirds with 15 kills and three aces. 

The Big Blue bounced back to claim a 3-1 win over Illinois Wesleyan in their final match of the season. Stuart tallied 15 kills, two blocks, and two aces, Kreder added 12 kills, and Flesner had 11 kills along with a service ace and six digs. Vignos totaled seven service aces on the night with three against the Titans and added 14 more digs to her season total. Bingenheimer notched 45 assists. At the net, Clarida tallied three blocks, Lauren Brummel had two. Grace Knowski tallied nine digs against IWU. 

Leading the way for the Titans was Courtney McAuliffe with 14 kills and four blocks. 

Millikin dropped the first set before winning three straight. In the first set, the Titans pulled ahead 2-4 on a kill by McAuliffe. The Big Blue answered with kills from Flesner and Kreder to tie the game. Senior Gabrielle Coulthard gave MU their first lead of the set with a service ace to pull ahead 6-5. The Titans took a 13-14 lead and never looked back, completing a 22-25 first set win.

In the second set, a kill from Brummel gave the Big Blue a 3-2 lead. They expanded their lead with Stuart behind the service line, pulling ahead 14-8. A 7-0 run with Flesner serving put the score at 24-13, and a Kreder kill closed out the 25-13 victory. 

Set three was close early on, with the Titans hanging with MU. IWU took an 11-16 lead, but a 7-0 run with Vignos serving gave Millikin a 22-20 lead. A block by Brummel and Clarida gave MU the 25-22 game three win, pulling ahead 2-1 in set victories. 

Set four started with another Vignos serving run. Back to back kills by Stuart started things off, and the Big Blue pulled ahead 8-4 early. They built on the lead with a Stuart service ace to take a 12-7 lead. Wesleyan battled back to come within two on a block and kill by McAuliffe, but a block from Brummel and Kreder kept the Big Blue lead alive at 16-10. A kill off the hand of Stuart ended the match, solidifying the 25-16 win for Millikin.

In the third game of the round robin, Carthage defeated Illinois Wesleyan in four sets.

Big Blue women's volleyball, who was ranked sixth in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association poll, finished the 2020 season 7-3 overall.
