Softball Splits with Titans, Remains atop CCIW Standings

On Friday, April 30, the Big Blue softball team traveled to Bloomington, Ill. to match up with the Illinois Wesleyan Titans in a battle for the top slot in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin standings. With the doubleheader split, Millikin remains atop the standings with a 22-8 conference record, while the Titans stayed in second with a 19-9 record.

With Aly Armstrong in the circle, the Big Blue took game one 7-2. Millikin jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. Rylee Blake started off the game with a single down the third baseline and a stolen base. Kaylee Goluch advanced Blake to third and reached base on a Titan error. Leah Foreman kept the offense rolling, reaching on a fielder's choice and scoring Blake. Camryn Skundberg picked up the second hit of the inning for MU, singling through the left side and plating Goluch. An RBI groundout off the bat of Gretchen Gould scored a third Millikin run, and Lexus Tennison sent a sacrifice fly to left field to score Skundberg on the tag.

The Big Blue tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth inning. Blake drew a walk to put a baserunner on, then crossed the plate when Foreman sent a home run over the center field fence. Millikin scored their final run of game one on a solo home run by Maddie Holland in the sixth.

Illinois Wesleyan mounted a late game rally in the seventh, scoring two runs. Megan Fontanetta singled, then scored on a Madison Moore home run to center.

The win credited to Armstrong was her twelfth of the season. Armstrong tallied seven strikeouts in the victory. Madie Monk took the game one loss for the Titans.

In game two, the Titans started off the scoring with a three run second inning. Toni Tortorella singled down the right field line to put a baserunner on, then scored on a Hope Yeoman single through the right side of the infield. Lexy Trammell, who reached on a fielder's choice, scored when Hannah Heraty sent a double to left center. The final Wesleyan run came on a single up the middle off the bat of Moore, scoring Yeoman.

Illinois Wesleyan added their final game two run in the top of the fifth. Sherwin singled to right, then scored on a Trammell double to center.

Rallying back, Millikin chipped away at the deficit in the fifth. Three straight singles by the senior outfield trio of Holland, Kailey Pulec, and Skielyr Trenkle loaded the bases. Holland was thrown out at the plate on a ball put into play by Blake, but a walk drawn by Goluch plated Pulec.

The Big Blue fell in game two 1-4. Nina Mardjetko picked up the win for the Titans in game two. Addison Sargent was credited with the loss.

The Big Blue are set to match up against their final conference opponent on Saturday, May 1 at the Workman Family Softball Field when they take on Elmhurst.
