Softball Edges Elmhurst Twice in Doubleheader Sweep

The Big Blue softball team traveled to Elmhurst, Ill. on Saturday, April 9 to take on the Blue Jays of Elmhurst University. Millikin received votes in the most recent National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III poll.

Elmhurst struck first in the scoring column in game one. In the bottom of the second inning, Jenna Geraci singled up the middle, then later scored on a single off the bat of Veronica Zahn to give the Blue Jays a one run lead.

Held scoreless through five, the Big Blue tied things up in the top of the sixth. Goluch started the inning with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Leah Foreman. A fly ball to left field from designated player Aubrey Hunt moved Goluch to third on the tag, and she scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at one apiece.

The game moved into extra innings, and in the tenth, Millikin used four hits to take their first lead of the day. After picking up two outs on the first two batters of the inning, Skielyr Trenkle put the offense in motion with a single to right field. Blake singled to right center and took second base when the Blue Jays made a play on Trenkle at third. Following in Goluch's footsteps, Trenkle scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. A Goluch single up the middle scored Blake, then Foreman double into left center plated Goluch to put the Big Blue up 4-1.

Millikin took care of business defensively in the bottom half of the inning and earned the 4-1 victory over Elmhurst in game one. Reigning CCIW Pitcher of the Week Aly Armstrong tallied her ninth victory of the season, striking out eight. Brianna Pisauro surrendered eight hits to Millikin and picked up the loss.

In game two, the Big Blue were the home team on the scoreboard. Elmhurst put up a run right away in the top of the first with an Alyssa Filkowski home run to left center. They tacked on another in the top of the third inning, starting with a walk issued to Pisauro who later scored on a wild pitch.

Down two runs, MU took the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Rylee Blake started things off with a triple to right center. A double by Goluch scored Blake and put another runner in scoring position for the Big Blue. Hunt's single to center brought Goluch home. With Sarah Lahner on first as the pinch runner, singles from Gretchen Gould and Maddie Holland helped bring a third Big Blue run home. Gould crossed the plate to score the fourth run of the inning when Trenkle reached on an error.

Elmhurst took the lead once again in the top of the fifth. Filkowski hit her second home run of the game to left center to pull the Blue Jays within one. Jamie Haas reached on a fielder's choice, then scored on a Mia Riese double in the right center gap. Riese then scored when Jackie Orel reached on an error.

The Big Blue knotted the score at five in the bottom half of the fifth on a home run to left field by Lexus Tennison

The tie was short-lived, as Elmhurst scored two runs in the sixth to pull ahead. A Geraci single later scored her pinch runner, Rosita Hepperle, on a Zahn single up the middle. Zahn scored the second Elmhurst run of the inning on an error.

Millikin jumped back in front in the bottom of the sixth, starting with Goluch doubling to right field. Foreman and Hunt followed it up, each notching doubles of their own to the left side of the field with Foreman picking up an RBI when Goluch crossed the plate and Hunt earning an RBI with Foreman scoring. Tied at seven, Emma Lewandowski entered the game as a pinch runner for Hunt. She advanced to third on a wild pitch, then scored on a Gould RBI groundout.

The Big Blue defense held Elmhurst scoreless in the top of the seventh to pick up the 8-7 win and the doubleheader sweep. Addison Sargent started the game in the circle for MU, pitching four innings and striking out two. Bailey Coffman earned her fourth win of the season with her three innings of work. Karly Krown took the loss for Elmhurst.

With the sweep, Millikin moved to 16-6 overall, with a 13-3 conference record. The Big Blue softball team will face another conference opponent on Saturday, April 10 as they travel to Naperville, Ill. for their second doubleheader of the season against North Central College.
