Softball Drops NCAA Opener to Belhaven, Meets DePauw in Elimination Game

The Big Blue softball team opened up the NCAA Tournament against Belhaven University on Thursday, May 20 at the Workman Family Softball Field. Millikin was defeated 1-2 in the opening game of the Decatur Regional and will face DePauw University in an elimination game.

Belhaven put up two runs in the top of the third inning, starting with a leadoff triple down the right field line by Abby Trahan. A walk issued to Marlee Blackwell put two runners on, and Elizabeth Taggard sent a single to right center to score Trahan. The Blazers loaded the bases, and a walk drawn by Anna McNeer scored the second run.

The Big Blue used a late game, two out rally in the bottom of the seventh inning when a hit off the bat of Lexus Tennison cleared the left field fence for a home run. Maddie Holland doubled down the left field line to put another runner on, but the Blazers secured the third out and the win to move on to face Calvin College on Friday, May 21 on the second day of competition.

Kennedy Carruth was the victor in the circle, striking out seven in seven innings of work, only allowing four hits. Aly Armstrong took the loss for the Big Blue, striking out 11 and allowing five hits.

Millikin dropped to the loser's bracket in the double elimination regional tournament and will match up with DePauw in their second matchup at 10:00 AM on Friday, May 21. DePauw picked up a first round victory over the sixth seeded Mount St. Joseph 3-1.

Day two of competition at the Workman Family Softball Field will consist of four games beginning at 10:00 AM. Tickets will be sold beginning at 9:00 AM at the gates of the Workman Family Softball Field for $5 apiece.
