Softball Edges North Central in Ten Inning Thriller

The Big Blue softball team matched up against the fifth seeded North Central Cardinals in the second round of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament. Millikin defeated the Cardinals in ten innings 7-6. 

North Central found themselves in the scoring column first, starting with a single and a stolen base by Jaime Smith in the bottom of the third inning. Smith scored on a double to left center off the bat of Emily Miller. A double down the right field line by Breanna Adams scored the pinch runner, Kylie Ryza to give NCC a two run lead. 

Millikin quickly took the lead in the fourth. Pinch hitter Aubrey Hunt doubled through the right side of the infield to put a runner in scoring position for the Big Blue. Gretchen Gould tallied another hit for MU, then Lexus Tennison reached on an error to load the bases. A walk issued to Maddie Holland plated one, then a walk drawn by Skielyr Trenkle scored another to knot the score at two. Rylee Blake knocked in the go-ahead run with a single to left field. 

The Cardinals regained the lead in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs. Talia Torosian drew a walk, then advanced to third when Cork laid down a sacrifice bunt and reached on an error. Alexa Sherlund reached base on an infield single to load the bases, and the CCIW Freshman of the Year Katie Del Re singled up the middle to score two. Smith picked up an RBI when she fouled out near the right field fence and Sherlund tagged. 

The Big Blue chipped away at the two run deficit in the sixth. Trenkle and Blake drew back to back walks, and Trenkle later scored on a sacrifice fly by Leah Foreman. 

North Central regained the two run lead in the bottom of the inning. Del Re singled to left, then scored on a single by Adams. 

Millikin used a two out rally in the top of the seventh to send the game to extra innings. Maddie Holland reached on an infield single to put a baserunner on for MU and scored when Kailey Pulec sent a double down the left field line. Pulec crossed the plate on an infield single by Trenkle to tie the game at six apiece. 

After two scoreless innings, Blake led off the top of the tenth with a walk. Kaylee Goluch advanced Blake to second with a sacrifice bunt, and the winning run was plated on a Hunt single down the left field line. 

Aly Armstrong picked up the win for the Big Blue with six strikeouts. Adams took the loss for the Cardinals.

Millikin will host all games in the second weekend of play, with the Big Blue matching up against the winner of Illinois Wesleyan and Carthage.
