Women's Volleyball Defeats #9 Transylvania in UChicago Invite Split

The Big Blue women's volleyball team traveled to Chicago, Ill. on Saturday, September 11 for the UChicago Invite. Millikin defeated #9 Transylvania University before dropping their second match to Concordia University - Wisconsin. 

Against Transylvania, Tori Stuart tallied 20 kills and four service aces. Kailee Itzenhuiser chipped in 14 kills and three aces, and Jessi Kreder added 13 kills and tied for a team high in blocks with Lauren Brummel with four apiece. Anna Deutschmann notched a team high seven aces from behind the service line along with 15 digs. Julianna Vassallo led the Big Blue in digs with 29, and Olivia Grbavac chipped in 17 to go along with 45 assists. 

Millikin dropped the first set by a score of 23-25 before bouncing back to take two straight sets 25-17, 25-20. The Big Blue capped off their third set victory on a service ace by Stuart. In a set that required extra points, the Pioneers secured set four by a score of 26-28 before Millikin claimed set five 15-10. 

The second match of the afternoon for the Big Blue was taken to five sets as well, this time against Concordia Wisconsin. Kreder led Millikin with 17 kills. Stuart added 13, and Brummel chipped in 11. Vassallo once again tallied the top amount of digs with 30, alongside five service aces. Sophia Gibbs topped the list of blocks with five, and Grbavac added 43 more assists to her season total. 

Millikin started off the match with a set one 25-15 victory. Concordia secured the set two win 22-25, before the Big Blue rallied to take set three 25-19. Concordia picked up two straight set victories 23-25, 11-15 to hand MU their first loss of the season. The Falcons had an attacking percentage of .409 in set five, compared to the Big Blue's .043. 

Jenna Chaussee led the Falcons with 13 kills and two service aces. Maycee Karpfinger tallied 10 blocks. 

Millikin women's volleyball will face their first conference opponent of the season on Wednesday, September 15 when they travel to Kenosha, Wis. to match up against the #5 Firebirds of Carthage College at 7:00 PM.
