#14 Big Blue Women's Volleyball Finishes Reverse Sweep in Five-Set Thriller

The fourteenth ranked Millikin women's volleyball team completed a reverse sweep of North Park University on Wednesday, September 22 at the Griswold Center in Decatur, Ill. The 3-2 victory moved the Big Blue to 11-1 overall, 2-0 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin.

Millikin's Lauren Brummel was the kills leader with 13. Tori Stuart and Jessi Kreder each added 11. Sophia Howell tallied four aces, including three straight during the Big Blue comeback. Anna Deutschmann added three, and Stuart tallied two aces. Kreder was the Big Blue blocks leader with four. Reece Brown played her first full match of the season, tallying 39 assists. Julianna Vassallo notched 19 digs, and Kailee Itzenhuiser added 17.

The Vikings were led by Adriana Rodriguez with 18 kills and two aces. Taylor Guy dominated the net with seven total blocks. Kharlie Simeona-French added six, and Rhianna Huebner added five. Christina Gatta led North Park in assists with 39 and digs with 18.

The first two sets were taken by North Park. A 6-0 run early in the set put the Vikings up 6-2. Another short run pushed the Viking lead to seven, and they finished their 25-14 victory with a kill off the hand of Guy.

Set two saw a similar outcome. In a much closer 25-19 set, North Park used back-to-back-to-back kills from Rodriguez, Simeona-French, and Huebner to pull ahead 22-18. After a block by Brummel and Sophia Gibbs ended the Viking run, North Park tallied three straight points to end the set.

In the third set, North Park pulled ahead 3-4 before two straight service aces off the hand of Deutschmann highlighted a Big Blue run that brought the score to 9-3. North Park mounted a comeback, but Millikin completed a 25-19 set victory to pull the overall score to 2-1.

North Park got out to an early lead, but three straight service aces from Howell brought the Big Blue within one. In a tightly contested set that saw multiple ties and lead changes, a Kreder kill followed by a Deutschmann ace secured the 25-20 Millikin win.

In set five, the set was tightly contested through ten points each way. Millikin used a run with Howell behind the service line to bring the score to 14-11. The Vikings put up a fight before allowing match point, but on an attack by Brilynd Pence, Kreder and Brummel combined for a block to complete the comeback.

Millikin will face tough competition when they travel to the Pointers Invitational II in Stevens Point, Wisconsin on Friday, September 24 and Saturday, September 25. The Big Blue are set to match up against the University of Chicago in their first match of the tournament.
