Big Blue Women's Volleyball Defeats a Pair of Pioneers at the Central-Grinnell Invitational

The Big Blue women's volleyball team picked up two wins on the opening day of the Central-Grinnell Invitational in Grinnell, Iowa to improve to 3-0 on the season.
In the first match of the day, Millikin matched up against the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. The Big Blue claimed a 3-1 win over the Pioneers.

Led by Kamryn Flesner and Tori Stuart at the net who each tallied 11 kills, the Big Blue racked up 32 team kills. Anna Deutschmann served up three aces, and Stuart added two aces from behind the service line. Olivia Grbavac notched 26 assists, and Julianna Vassallo led MU in digs with 15. Grbavac added 13 and Deutschmann added nine. Lauren Brummel tallied the top number of blocks against the Pioneers with five.

The Big Blue took the first two sets by 25-19 and 25-21 scores before dropping the third set 13-25. Millikin finished out with a fourth set win 25-19 to claim their first win of the day.

Next up for the Big Blue was a matchup with the Pioneers of Grinnell. Millikin swept the second Pioneer squad they faced, picking up a 3-0 victory.

Millikin was once again led by Flesner and Stuart at the net with 10 kills apiece. Jessi Kreder added seven. Grbavac tallied two aces, 23 assists, and 11 digs. Vassallo was credited with five assists and eight digs. Sophia Gibbs led the Big Blue in blocks with three. MU notched a hitting percentage of .391 in the first set, .232 overall in the match.

Grinnell was led in four categories by Kaylin Kuhn: kills (9), aces, (1), blocks (1), and digs (10).

Millikin's sweep was completed with set scores of 25=21, 25-22, and 25-17. The Big Blue will finish out the Central-Grinnell Invitational on Saturday, September 4 with an 11:00 AM matchup against Cornell College.
