Women's Volleyball Stuns North Central in Crucial CCIW Clash

The Big Blue women's volleyball team matched up with the Cardinals of North Central College in their final home regular season match of the 2022 campaign. In a battle of two 4-2 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin squads, the Big Blue stunned North Central with a sweeping victory.

Millikin took the first set by a 25-21 margin. The evenly matched set was close until the very end when a kill from Kailee Itzenhuiser gave the Big Blue a 22-20 advantage. After a Millikin service error, a Big Blue sideout came on a kill from setter Reece Brown, then capped off the set victory with a kill by Jessi Kreder and a service ace off the hand of Olivia Grbavac. 

In the second set, Millikin jumped out to a 10-6 lead after a Brown service ace, but the Cardinals rallied and took a 17-19 lead late in the set. After a Big Blue timeout, Millikin turned the tables to take a 21-19 lead after a Kaitlyn Skowronksi service ace. A Kreder block gave MU a 26-25 advantage, and a North Central attacking error sealed the 27-25  Big Blue victory to give Millikin a 2-0 lead.

The third set saw the Big Blue take a large lead early, then never looked back. On a kill by Sophia Gibbs, Millikin took a 7-2 lead. Later in the set, the Big Blue lead increased to 20-8 after a Cardinal attacking error. Millikin finished out the 25-11 victory with kills by Itzenhuiser, Gibbs, and a block by Gibbs. 

Itzenhuiser was the leader in the kills column with 13. Kreder added 10 and two blocks. Skowronski served up three aces. Grbavac tallied 20 assists, and Sophia Howell was the digs leader with 18. 

The Cardinals were led by Aidan Brown with seven kills. 

With the win, the Big Blue improve to 20-8 overall, 5-2 in conference play. Millikin is set to face their final CCIW opponent of the season at Illinois Wesleyan on Friday, October 28 when they head to Bloomington for three weekend matches.
