Walk-Off Wild Pitch Gives Big Blue Baseball Doubleheader Sweep

The Millikin baseball team swept a doubleheader from the College of St. Scholastica on February 27, 2022. After winning game one 2-0, Millikin won the second game 6-5 with Frank Bryan scoring the game winning run in the ninth inning on a wild pitch.

Millikin played small ball in game two with only one of the Big Blue's runs being driven in with a base hit. Millikin scored two runs in the first with Kyle Gibson driving home the first run with a sacrifice fly. Andy Niebrugge singled home Millikin's second run. Gibson had another sacrifice fly in the fifth inning scoring Liam McGill who opened the inning with a walk.  Tommy Shaw drove home a run in the sixth with a groundout as the Big Blue took advantage of a lead-off walk by Ethan Current.

The Saints held a 5-4 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth.  Niebrugge opened the eighth inning with a walk and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Keagan Brady.  Bryan opened the ninth with a base hit and was sacrificed to second. Bryan stole third as Gibson was drawing a walk. Niebrugge was intentionally walked to load the bases. With two outs in the inning Bryan scored the winning run sliding into home just ahead of a dive by catcher Kam Larson.

Bryan was 4-5 in game two and Garrett Fritz collected two hits.  Max Simpson was the winning pitcher in relief. He pitched two-thirds of an inning allowing one hit.

Matt Tautages had three hits for the Saints. Jack Harris hit a two-run homer.

Caleb Buehrle pitched Millikin to the 2-0 victory in game one. He pitched seven shutout innings allowing three hits while striking out five.

The Big Blue scored both runs in the third inning. McGill led off the inning with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Bryan. A throwing error allowed Millikin's second run to score.

Millikin is now 6-2 while College of St. Scholastica goes to 0-2.  The two teams will play again on Monday, February 28 at 11 a.m.
