Big Blue Softball Overpowers WashU in Sunday Doubleheader Sweep

The Big Blue softball team took on the Bears of Washington University in St. Louis on Sunday, March 6 at the Workman Family Softball Field in Decatur, Ill. Millikin swept their second doubleheader of the weekend, with their offensive firepower leading them to an 8-3 game one victory and a 9-4 win in game two.

In game one, the Big Blue opened up the bottom of the first inning with an offensive explosion. After WashU secured the first two outs, Leah Foreman drew a walk, the Kaylee Goluch notched an infield single to put two runners on. Gretchen Gould reached on an error, scoring both runners, then a single to center off the bat of Grace Biondo returned two runners to the basepaths. Cassie Reed stepped into the designated player spot, sending a deep fly ball to center that went off the centerfielder's glove and over the fence for a three-run homerun.

Up 5-0 heading into the top of the second, Millikin went to work on defense, but WashU chipped away at the lead. Stringing together three straight singles by Drabek, Kennedy, and Nommensen, the Bears put two runs of their own on the board.

After batting around in the first, Rylee Blake was up again and started off the inning with a baserunner after she was hit by a pitch. Foreman tallied her first hit of the day sending a homerun over the center field fence to put Millikin up 7-2.

WashU picked up another run in the top of the sixth after leading off the inning with a walk, then Kennedy sent a double to right center to score Reardon.

Millikin tallied one final run in the bottom of the inning, starting with a walk issued to Blake, then a bunt single off the bat of Kendallyn Davison scored Blake.

In the 8-3 victory, Aly Armstrong picked up the win for her third of the season. Armstrong struck out five and allowed seven hits through her seven innings of work.

In game two, WashU got on the board first after a Baumstark double to left center then back-to-back-to-back walks scored Baumstark.

Millikin quickly matched the Bears and then some, starting with a Blake single to left field. Davison laid down a sacrifice bunt and reached on an error, plating Blake in the process. Foreman was hit by a pitch, then Gould singled to right field to score Davison. A Reed single to right center scored both Gould and Foreman to give Millikin a 4-1 lead.

The Big Blue added another run in the bottom of the second when Davison tripled to right field, then later scored on a sacrifice fly from Foreman.

WashU added a run of their own in the third, starting with two singles and a walk to load the bases. A Hay single through the left side of the infield scored Baumstark. The Bears tacked on another in the fourth when Reardon scored on a wild pitch after walking.

In the fifth, Gould sent a double to center then later scored when pinch runner Jada Wilson crossed the plate on a fielder's choice from Goluch to give the Big Blue a 6-4 lead.

WashU once again matched the Big Blue in the sixth as Gould hit an infield single, then a Wong double to left field scored Gould.

Millikin saw another big offensive inning in the sixth, beginning with a walk drawn by Lanie Chizmark. Chizmark stole second, then advanced to third when Blake reached on a Bears error. The first run of the inning came when Chizmark crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Foreman sent a single to right field to score Blake, then back-to-back-to-back singles by Biondo, Gould, and Reed scored one.

The game two victory in the circle was credited to Addison Sargent, her second of the season. Sargent struck out one and allowed six hits in six innings of work. Charly Warlow entered in the top of the seventh and struck out two in her inning of work.

The Big Blue are set to travel to The Spring Games in Florida for their next 12 games. Millikin will open the tournament with a matchup against fellow Decatur, Ill. NCAA Regional participant Mount St. Joseph University on Friday, March 11.
