#20 Big Blue Softball Rolls Thunder, Sweeps CCIW Opening Doubleheader

The #20 Big Blue softball team matched up with the Thunder of Wheaton College on Saturday, April 2 at the Workman Family Softball Field in their opening College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin matchups of the 2022 season. The Big Blue swept the Thunder, taking game one by an 8-0 margin and game two 3-0.

Millikin struck first in the scoring column in the bottom of the first inning in game one, starting off the inning with a walk issued to Rylee Blake. Kendallyn Davison added a second baserunner with a single to shallow left field. A wild pitch moved the runners over, then Leah Foreman delivered a sacrifice fly to plate Blake. Davison crossed the plate on a second sacrifice fly, this time off the bat of designated player Cassie Reed

In the bottom of the fourth, Grace Biondo sent a single down the right field line, then Kaylee Goluch laid down a sacrifice bunt to put her in scoring position. Emma Lewandowski was credited with a triple, scoring after a Thunder throwing error to give Millikin a 4-0 advantage.

The Big Blue tacked on another run in the fifth with a leadoff home run off the bat of Davison, sent to deep center.

In the bottom of the sixth, Biondo singled up the middle to place a baserunner on. Goluch and Lex Tennison each reached on Wheaton errors to load the bases, then a Davison double cleared them to give the Big Blue an 8-0 lead and ending the game.

Aly Armstrong picked up the victory, allowing three hits in six innings of work while striking out five.

In game two, Goluch was responsible for all three RBI in the 3-0 win. As the visitors on the scoreboard, Reed drew a walk to place a runner on base. She was replaced at first by pinch runner Sarah Lahner, then Gretchen Gould singled and Biondo reached after Wheaton throwing error in the attempt to take out the lead runner at third. With the bases loaded, Goluch sent a sacrifice fly to left field to give MU a 1-0 lead.

The Millikin offense struck again in the top of the third inning. The Thunder quickly picked up two outs, but Reed started the rally with two outs with a single to center. Gould reached on an error, then Biondo walked to load the bases, and Goluch singled through the left side to plate Reed and Gould.

Addison Sargent was the winning pitcher in game two, improving to 9-0 on the season. Sargent allowed two hits and struck out six in the shutout.

With the doubleheader sweep, the Big Blue moved to 20-2 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. Millikin will continue their conference campaign with a road trip on Saturday, April 9 to match up with North Central and Elmhurst over the weekend.
