Big Blue Softball Falls Twice on Second Day of CCIW Tournament

The Big Blue softball team fell twice on the second day of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Tournament on Saturday, May 7 at the Workman Family Softball Field. Millikin is eliminated from the CCIW Tournament, falling 0-2 to Illinois Wesleyan in the first game of the day before being walked off in an 0-1 contest against North Central.

After winning their first round game against North Central on Friday, May 6 by a 5-3 margin, the Big Blue were set for a winner's bracket tiff with the Titans of Illinois Wesleyan. In a game where Millikin tallied just one hit, the Titans scored both runs in the top of the seventh. Colleen Palczynski crossed the plate on an MU throwing error when Natalie Grubczak reached on a fielder's choice, then Megan Fontanetta put the ball into play for a fielder's choice to score Ava Khoury and secure the two-run victory for IWU.

Addison Sargent struck out two through seven innings of work, allowing just four hits.

In the final game of the day, the Big Blue squared off against North Central in a loser's bracker matchup. The Cardinals walked off the game in the bottom of the seventh as the home team when Andrea Richards delivered a single into shallow left center to plate Jaime Smith who reached on a single. The Big Blue stranded seven runners on base in the game.

Aly Armstrong was credited with the loss, striking out six and allowing five hits through 6.1 innings pitched.

Millikin will await their fate on Monday, May 10 to see if they are selected for an at-large bid into the 2022 NCAA Tournament. The Big Blue headed into the postseason as the #1 team in the NCAA's Regional Rankings in Region VIII.
