Big Blue Volleyball Splits on Day Two of Jim Coleman Tournament

The Big Blue women's volleyball team matched up against Rose-Hulman and the host Spartans of Aurora University on Saturday, September 17 at the Jim Coleman Memorial Classic in Aurora, Ill. Millikin defeated Rose-Hulman in three sets before falling to Aurora 1-3 to finish 2-1 on the weekend. 

Against Rose-Hulman, the Big Blue needed extra points to secure the first set victory with a 30-28 win. In set two, they picked up a 25-13 win then posted a 25-14 win in the third set. Millikin outkilled the Fightin' Engineers 47-29 and recorded a .340 attacking percentage. 

The Big Blue were led offensively by Tori Stuart with 14 kills. Addison Oyer added nine, and Kailee Itzenhuiser added eight and four service aces. Sophia Howell tallied 18 digs and three service aces. Jessi Kreder, Sophia Gibbs, and Oyer all added three total blocks. Reece Brown tallied the top number of assists with 27. 

In the tightly contested first set, Millikin pulled ahead 24-20 before Rose-Hulman strung together four straight points to tie the set. Itzenhuiser recorded a kill to pull ahead 25-24, but the Engineers matched. Stuart finally tallied two straight kills to break the tie and give Millikin the 30-28 victory. 

Against Aurora, the Spartans took the first two sets with 21-25 scores in both. The Big Blue rallied to take the third set by a 25-18 margin before falling 19-25 in the final set. 

Millikin outkilled the Spartans 54-50. Stuart once again led the way with 16 kills. Itzenhuiser tallied 14. Howell recorded the top number of digs with 17, and Jessi Kreder notched four total blocks. Sandy Brindl added 24 set assists to her season totals, and Brown was credited with 23. 

For the Spartans, Sydnei Avery led the way at the net with 17 kills. 

At the conclusion of the Jim Coleman Memorial Tournament, Stuart and Itzenhuiser were named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Big Blue will return to College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin play on Wednesday, September 21 when they travel to Waukesha, Wis. for a matchup with Carroll University.
