Big Blue Volleyball Opens Season with Two West Coast Wins

The Big Blue women's volleyball team opened their 2022 season at the Pacific Coast Classic in LaVerne, Calif. with wins over Whittier and the host Leopards of the University of LaVerne.

Against Whittier, Millikin picked up a sweep with 25-15, 25-21, 25-15 set wins. The Big Blue outkilled the Poets by a 38-25 margin for a .206 overall attacking percentage. Millikin was led by Tori Stuart with 11 kills. Jessi Kreder added 10 and Kailee Itzenhuiser tallied nine. Reece Brown led the Big Blue in assists with 33, and Brown, Itzenhuiser, and Sophia Howell each notched two service aces apiece. Kreder led the team in blocks with four, and Itzenhuiser and Howell each recorded 11 digs defensively. 

In their second match of the day, the Big Blue secured the first set by a 25-20 margin. LaVerne rallied and took the second set, defeating MU 20-25. In the third set, Millikin regained the advantage with a 25-20 win before LaVerne forced a fifth set with a 19-25 fourth set score. In set five, MU downed the Leopards 15-9 to take the 3-2 match.

The Big Blue continued their offensive proficiency, recording a .231 attacking percentage with 52 total kills. Stuart once again led the way at the net with 15 kills. Kreder added 13 and Itzenhuiser notched 10 along with three service aces and 14 digs. Kreder added eight blocks, Brown tallied 38 assists, and Howell led the way in digs with 17. 

The Big Blue are back in action from California, taking on Occidental College at 11:15 AM PT, followed by a matchup with host and preseason ranked No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College at 3:45 PM PT.
