Men's Soccer Plays Spoiler with First Win over Wheaton in Program History

The Millikin men's soccer team matched up with Wheaton College at Frank M. Lindsay Field in Decatur, Ill. for their final match of the 2023 season on Wednesday, October 25. In the match that Wheaton needed to win or draw to claim the 2023 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin title, the Big Blue played spoiler with a 3-1 victory, their first win over Wheaton in program history.

Wheaton got on the board first in the 10th minute, scoring on a Harrison Lee goal assisted by Pryse Anderson. Millikin tied things up with a goal of their own in the 28th minute when Nacho Diaz used an assist from Clayton Gibson to bring the score to 1-1 at the half.

Diaz put the Big Blue ahead 2-1 with a goal assisted by Brennan Smith in the 51st minute, then Tobias Øverbye increased the MU lead to 3-1 off a goal assisted by Gibson in the 81st minute. 

Wheaton nearly capitalized, with Anderson lining up for a penalty kick in the 68th minute but Chase Mandra's diving save maintained the Big Blue lead. Mandra recorded five saves in the contest. 

The Thunder outshot the Big Blue 7-15 in the contest. With the win, the Big Blue finished the 2023 campaign with a 6-9-1 record overall.
