Millikin Baseball Splits with Firebirds

The Millikin baseball team split a doubleheader with Carthage College on April 2 at the Workman Family Baseball Field in Decatur, Illinois. The Big Blue won game one 1-0 and lost game two 3-1. After winning 12-0 on Saturday, Millikin wins the opening series 2-1 to start play in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW).
 
Pitching dominated on a sunny, but windy day at Workman Family Field. In game one, Millikin's Drew Detmers was the winning pitcher throwing eight and one-third innings allowing only three hits and no runs while striking out six. Aaron Agee earned his fifth save of the season getting a double play ground ball to end the game.
 
Carthage got a strong performance on the mound from Bryce Schaum who pitched eight innings allowing one earned run and five hits.
 
The Big Blue scored the game's only run in the second inning. Freshman Sam Bushur opened the inning with a single. He was bunted over to second and then went to third on a base hit from Ryan Janssen. Bushur scored on a sacrifice fly from Andy Niebrugge.
Kyle Gibson had two hits for Millikin. Gibson was one of several Millikin players to make great defensive plays in the game as well.
 
AJ Gaca had two of Carthage's three hits.
 
Carthage got on the board for the first time in the series in the top of the first in game two with two runs. P.J. Moser and Matt Felber had RBI singles for the Firebirds.
 
Millikin's lone run was scored by Tommy Shaw who doubled in the third and scored on a bases loaded walk by Ryan Janssen. Shaw had two hits in the game for Millikin.
 
Cody Tostrud had three hits for Carthage and scored two runs. Collin Callahan had the Firebirds final RBI with a single.
 
Jake Hartman, Jr. was the winning pitcher in relief throwing five innings allowing only two hits. Brendan Roberts held Millikin hitless for the final two innings to earn a save.
 
Millikin is now 16-7, 2-1 while Carthage is 6-11, 1-2.
