Men's Tennis Downs Illinois Wesleyan, Advances to Semifinals of CCIW Tournament

The Big Blue men's tennis team traveled to Wheaton, Ill. for the quarterfinal round of the 2023 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Tournament on Thursday, April 27. As third seed, Millikin matched up against sixth-seeded Illinois Wesleyan in their opening matchup, winning 5-1.

Millikin started off strong in doubles competition, with the team of Theodor Wolf and Clayton Maack winning over Ryan McCoy and Evan Turnbull at No. 2 by an 8-2 margin. The Titans evened the score at No. 1 with the team of Ian Turnbull and Carter Burk downing Hasting Bjorkman and Martin Cardestig 5-8. The Big Blue would pull ahead heading into singles play with Cole Phillips and Rodrigo Laux teaming up for an 8-7 (10-7) win over Zeke Cross and Ben Vigneri. 

On the singles side, Phillips earned a win at No. 5, defeating Evan Turnbull in twin 6-1 sets. Cardestig furthered the Big Blue lead at No. 3, winning over Burk in 6-1, 6-4 sets. Wolf secured the final victory at No. 4 over Vigneri by a 6-4, 6-3 margin to push Millikin to the second round. 

The Big Blue will face the winner of No. 2 Carthage and No. 7 Carroll in the second round. On the other side of the bracket, top seeded North Central advanced over Elmhurst and fourth-seeded Wheaton defeated Augustana and will meet in the second round matchup. Tomorrow's match for MU will be the second of the day, set to begin at 2:30 PM in Wheaton.
