Softball Earns Share of CCIW Regular Season Title with Sweep of Elmhurst

The Millikin softball team took the field at the Workman Family Softball Field for the final time in the 2023 regular season on Saturday, May 6 for a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin doubleheader against Elmhurst. The Big Blue celebrated their seniors: Morgan Boward, Aundrea Jenkins, Addison Sargent, and Jada Wilson, along with the three fifth-year players Aly Armstrong, Kaylee Goluch, and Lex Tennison.

Deterred by several lightning delays, the games got off to a late start. With their sweep of Elmhurst, Millikin clinched at least a share of the CCIW regular season title for the third consecutive season. With both IWU and Millikin recording a 14-2 record, the two share the title for the second year in a row.

In game one, Millikin got on the board when Goluch stepped to the plate with two ducks on the pond, hitting in Wilson and Jenkins with a triple to left center in the second inning. The Bluejays answered in the top of the third when an infield single off the bat of Chiara O'Leary scored Bailey Proffitt.

Up 2-1, Wilson sent a double down the right field line in the sixth to score Boward.

In the 3-1 victory, Tennison went 2-for-3 at the plate. Armstrong went the distance in the circle to pick up her 14th win of the season, striking out six and allowing just three hits and walking one batter.

In game two, the Big Blue scored right off the bat when Rylee Blake crossed the plate on a bunt off the bat of Leah Foreman. In the second, Blake singled to center to plate Jenkins, then Blake later scored on a single up the middle off the bat of Lanie Chizmark.

Already up three runs, the Big Blue added to their lead in the third when a Tennison single through the right side scored the designated player Armstrong. They tacked on another in the fourth when Goluch crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Foreman.

Millikin added three more runs to take an 8-0 lead. First, Tennison's single up the middle plated Boward, then Wilson touched home on a wild pitch. Tennison scored the final run of the game on another wild pitch.

In the game, Blake went 3-for-4 at the plate, and Tennison went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Addison Sargent was the victor on the mound, allowing two hits and striking out six through 5.0 innings of work. Charly Warlow entered the game and pitched two innings in relief, striking out four and holding the Bluejays hitless.

The Big Blue will head to Bloomington, Ill. for the 2023 CCIW Tournament as the second seed. Millikin is set to play on Thursday, May 11 against the winner of #3 North Park vs. #6 Elmhurst, with first pitch scheduled for 7:00 PM.
