Women's Volleyball Opens Season in New York with Win over Kean

The Big Blue women's volleyball team traveled to New York, NY for the NYU Season Opener Tournament. In their first matchup of the three-match tournament weekend, Millikin defeated Kean University 3-2 in five sets.

The Big Blue were victorious in the first set 25-14 and the second set 25-13. Kean rallied to take the third and fourth sets by 23-25 and 20-25 margins. Millikin took the fifth set 15-7 to secure their first victory of the season.

Junior Kailee Itzenhuiser was the kills leader with 13 and the digs leader with 24. Freshman Elle Richards added 11. Freshman setter Alyssa Frederking tallied 25 assists in her debut with the Big Blue, and Gracie Shaffer added 10. Emma Taylor notched seven service aces and Frederking added six.

Millikin outkilled Kean 48-37 and added 17 total team service aces.

In the fifth set, Frederking began with a service ace, followed by a Taylor Kill, then another service ace off the hand of Frederking put MU up 3-0. Kean put up a few points of their own, but an Addison Oyer kill gave Millikin a 10-4 lead. A kill by Itzenhuiser sealed the 15-7 victory.

With the win, the Big Blue moves to 1-0 on the season. They are slated to take on Ithaca College and New York University on Saturday, September 2 for their final two matches of the opening tournament.
