Volleyball Downs Capital, Fontbonne on Final Day of Home Tournament

The Big Blue women's volleyball team played host to the second day of their annual Millikin Invitational on Saturday, September 23 at the Griswold Center in Decatur, Ill. After picking up wins against Capital and Fontbonne, the Big Blue remain undefeated on their home floor in the 2023 campaign. 

In the morning matchup against Capital, Millikin won in three sets (25-15, 25-21, 25-12). The Big Blue offense had a balanced scoring attack, with Kailee Itzenhuiser, Addison Oyer, and Delaney Higgins all recording seven kills. Sophia Howell, Gracie Shaffer, and Olivia Grbavac all tallied two service aces, and Alyssa Frederking added 20 set assists. Defensively, Emma Taylor added two blocks and Howell tallied 16 digs. 

Millikin outkilled the Comets 42-10 and outdug Capital 46-31. Capital was led by Lindsay Rich with six kills. 

Against Fontbonne, Millikin dropped the first frame by a score of 23-25 before rallying to take the next three sets 25-20, 25-19, and 25-19. 

Itzenhuiser once again topped the kills column with 13, and Oyer added 12. Itzenhuiser notched six service aces. Frederking tallied 24 assists, and Shaffer added 22. Howell was credited with 25 digs. 

The Big Blue had a total 13 service aces, including three straight to end the final set and seal the Millikin victory. Millikin outkilled the Griffins 55-36. Hannah Gallagher led Fontbonne offensively with nine kills, and Kristen Kaempfe added eight. 

Itzenhuiser, Howell, and Higgins were all named members of the All-Tournament Team.

Millikin moves to 11-4 with the 4-0 weekend. They are slated to take on their first road College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin matchup on Friday, September 29 when they travel to Chicago, Ill. to take on reigning CCIW Tournament champions, North Park.
