Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Morgan Vogels

Men's Basketball Defeated by Elmhurst

The Millikin men's basketball team continued their conference slate on Saturday, January 20, meeting the Bluejays of Elmhurst University. The Big Blue couldn't snap their losing streak, falling 53-61.

Nate Straughter was the leading scorer for Millikin, scoring 16 on 6-for-13 shooting from the field. He recorded seven rebounds in the game. Frazier Ott posted a double-double, scoring 11 and grabbing 10 rebounds. JT Welch added 12 points.

The Big Blue shot just 24% from the field in the first half, going 6-for-25 from the floor, then went 12-for-34 in the second half to shoot 30.5% on the game.

Elmhurst's John Ittounas scored 20 points, and Jonathan Zapinski added 16. The Bluejays went 25-for-60 from the field to shoot 41.7% from the field.

Elmhurst took a 15 point lead into the halftime break, with the Big Blue down 22-37 at the half. Millikin won the second half 31-24, but it wasn't enough to overcome the first half deficit.

After the Bluejays jumped out to an early 10 point lead, Millikin cut the deficit with a three by Straughter with 11:37 remaining in the first half to cut the lead to 9-12. Elmhurst quickly pushed the lead to 15 with 7:15 to go with back to back layups by Zapinski, then held a double digit lead for the remainder of the half.

Millikin started the second half on a run, with Welch hitting a three then forcing an Elmhurst turnover he turned into a layup to cut their lead to 10. A free throw by Jaden McClain then a made three by Jacob Bullock put Millikin down six at 31-37 with 16:54 to go. With 10:42 remaining, Millikin cut the deficit to two on a pair of made free throws by Ott, then a Welch jumper tied the score.

After Elmhurst jumped back out to a six point lead, Straughter brought the score to 51-55 with a made jumper, then a layup by Ott with 1:21 remaining cut the lead to two. The late close game woes continued for the Big Blue, though, as Zapinski made a layup to push the lead to four, then a missed DeMarcus Bond jumper with 29 seconds remaining forced the Big Blue to foul and Elmhurst sealed the win with made free throws.

Millikin will travel to Chicago, Ill. on Wednesday, January 24 for a matchup with North Park University.
