Women's Volleyball Posts Sweeping Victory over Cornell to Advance in NCAA Tournament

Women's volleyball earned an at-large bid to the 2024 NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Tournament, meeting the Rams of Cornell College in their opening round matchup on Thursday, November 21 in sweeping fashion (25-23, 25-22, 25-19).

Kailee Itzenhuiser was the kills leader with 11, adding 14 digs. Elle Richards chipped in eight, and Kyra Carothers notched seven. Gracie Shaffer tallied four service aces, including one in the first set's match point. Alyssa Frederking was the assists leader with 16, and Shaffer added 13. Defensively, Sophia Howell tallied 16 digs and Sophia Gibbs recorded six total blocks.

Ilah Perez-Johnson was the kills leader for the Rams with 14. The Big Blue outkilled Cornell 37-35 in the match despite only hitting for .100 efficiency.

After falling behind 15-20 in the first set, Millikin rallied to pull the score to 17-20 on a kill by Richards. After Cornell matched their two points, the Big Blue ran off four straight points to pull the score to 21-22, then another four straight starting with a block by Richards and Carothers to win set one 25-23.

The second set saw a similar story early with Cornell taking an early 7-12 lead. Another run of four for the Big Blue highlighted by kills from Richards, Carothers, and Itzenhuiser pulled them within one with the score at 11-12. The Big Blue took the lead, going up 16-13 on a block by Carothers and Delaney Higgins. After a few back-and-forth points, the Big Blue held a 23-22 lead. Kills from Carothers and Itzenhuiser sealed the deal to put the Big Blue up 2-0 after a 25-22 set.

The third set saw a back-and-forth matchup, staying on trend with the entirety of the match. A block by Gibbs and Addison Oyer put MU up 18-14, then the Big Blue never looked back in the 25-19 final set win.

The Big Blue will be back in action on Friday, November 22 in Holland, Mich. when they rematch the University of Dubuque at 4:30 PM ET. Dubuque downed Case Western Reserve in a reverse sweep (20-25, 18-25, 26-24, 25-21, 15-6). Millikin previously defeated Dubuque earlier this season 3-1 (18-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-22).
